Day 5 of the challenge.
As this challenge comes to a close, I’ve found myself reflecting a lot on the past week’s material and what all this means for me now. On the first day, I wrote that coming into college I didn’t know where to start regarding my career in film and photography. But now, I do.
The final lesson of the week covered how to attract clients and keep them coming back. At the core of it all is understanding that by hiring you, the client is taking a risk. It’s my job as a creator to minimize that risk for the client. That comes from becoming a safe option for them. A safe option is someone who’s likeable, dependable, and someone who lives in integrity. Without these qualities, clients cannot and will not come to trust you and take that risk.
On top of having a good working relationship during the job you’re hired for, it’s important to continue building that relationship. DON’T let that connection drop after the one job. Reach out to them again, follow up, and show them you still care. That they’re not just a paycheck. This allows you to build a genuine friendship, causes you to stand out in their eyes, and even leads to more future jobs and referrals. And the best part is making friends and having fun while doing it.
At the end of the day, this week can be summed up by two words. Systems and Processes. Having these two things in place is the key to starting, running, and leading a successful business. By having specific systems and processes planned out and implemented, you know what you’re doing, why you’re doing it, and where it’s all supposed to lead.
Don’t just think of yourself as a freelancer looking for the next gig. You are a business. Think that way. Plan that way. Live that way.
This week has been full of lessons that have changed the way I think and have helped me get a better idea of how and where to focus my life during this pivotal chapter in my life. A big thanks to for providing this resource for people like me, and also to everyone who’s supported me thusfar, engaging with my content, reading through these captions, and just all the general support and encouragement overall. You’re the real ones.

Day 4 of the challenge.

A lot of times, we’re so caught up on promoting ourselves, our business, and following our own guidelines. Today’s video made me consider the flip side. Instead of being focused on my own business and how I want to portray it, how would things change if I thought of the client’s wants instead? The type of experience you provide to a client is what will separate you from everyone else. Everyone has talent. What makes you unique and stand out is how you approach the entire relationship.

To do so, it’s always helpful to put some consideration into how you are perceived. Put yourself in the client’s shoes and ask yourself questions as if you were on the receiving end of your services. How would you feel? Are you someone that’s easy to work with and enjoyable to be around? These are the kinds of questions that really help push you to be intentional with meeting and working with new clients.

The takeaway from all this is simply that when you are intentional and make everything about the client, not only do they feel validated, but they might be more willing to work with you again in the future. Value your clients and help them add value to their own company. In the end, you want build relationships and connections that can last outside of the job context. In doing so, there’s a level of trust and comfortability that can give you an edge for future jobs.

We’ve got one more day left in the challenge, and I’m at a place where I need to think about what kind of experience I am providing to my clients. My hope is that I can continue to build meaningful relationships with those I work with into the future and beyond.

Day 3 of the challenge.

Today’s big takeaway? “Intentionality is key.” It all starts with your purpose behind putting out content. If you’re posting and putting your work out there purely for the sake of putting it out there, then you’re LOSING. There’s no point. And that got me thinking. “Do I do things just to do them and post just to post?” I don’t think so. There’s definitely the intention of growing my skills and getting better as an artist. But what about the business side of things? That’s the part where I found myself questioning my intentions. Do I even have business minded intentions? Or am I not considering them enough?

Another topic discussed today was working for free. Time is limited and time is precious. Of course, that’s true for everyone, but sometimes we don’t realize how valuable it really is. I often told myself that doing work for free was not the best use of my time and, although I did do a few free gigs, I found that free jobs typically did not amount to too much after the job itself. This isn’t to say that working for free is bad. BUT. There needs to be intentionality behind working for free. How can I leverage the connection I make by working for free, and how can it be used to benefit me later on? These are the things I need to consider in the future when thinking about whether or not to take a job for free.

With this new mindset of being intentional with every business decision I make, the real work starts now. It’s up to me to continue the mindset of being super intentional every time I reach out to my list of 20. Always be asking, “how can I be more than just some random person that’s reaching out? How can I use this connection to get me closer to my goal? How can we mutually benefit each other?”

We’re now halfway through with this challenge, but the real work starts now. Let’s be intentional, and let’s get this 🍞.

Day 2 of the challenge.

Today’s all about my network. Who do I know? But more importantly, how can my relationship with people help propel me into reaching my goals and dreams of working with my dream client?

They say that your network = net worth. And in a way, this is true. Knowing people on a personal level is key to getting the attention of those big clients. Word of mouth is important, and personal in-person relationships carry so much more weight than one just formed online.

The biggest takeaway from today? Reevaluate my current network and my approach to networking. As someone currently seeking out job opportunities, I’ve been finding out just how important it is to know the right people who can get me connected to the opportunities and jobs I’m interested in. Taking today’s challenge of defining my dream client, listing the 20 people who have some sort of connection with the dream client, and writing down their influence and ease of access has made me realize my lack of impactful connections. My job now is to continue building relationships and my network, but to also seek out specific people and connections that have a bigger influence in my ability to get one step closer to my own dream client.

Here’s to finding these new influences for myself and my business.

Day 1 of the challenge.

Today’s video really made me reflect on my purpose as an artist and, as so well put it, as a businessman.

Day 1 was all about clarity and vision. And as someone wrapping up his last semester of college, I often find myself lacking in this area. Coming into college, I knew that I wanted to pursue a degree in film and that, in turn, led me to wanting to grow my skills in photography as well. But even though I knew I wanted to use my talents to tell stories of the many unique individuals in this world, I didn’t know where to start. Or what I even wanted to do with it.

The most important question that I was asked to consider was, “what does your perfect day look like? What does it look like once you’ve ‘made it’?” If I have this dream end goal in mind, how can I tangibly start making progress, even now? How can I reach the goal of being able to travel the world, participate in activities that I love, and tell stories of unique individuals? Can working with a company like GoPro or Red Bull get me closer to that goal? How do I even get to a place like GoPro? Like Red Bull? Does it start with being part of a team that produces documentaries for my church? Or should I reach out to my friends and other local college students that are student athletes?

I might not be 100% sure just yet, but I do know that those are just a few ways to get started. Because just like Zack said, “everything you do should be intentional and have clarity.” This is just one decision I can use and leverage in order to attain my end goal.
It’s already clear that I have a lot of thinking and reevaluating to do. I need to define, or maybe even redefine, my career goals in life. And what better time to start than now. Right as I approach my next steps into the “real world.” Thanks for the food for thought.

And if you’ve made it this far, let me ask you, too. Let me know what your life would look like once you’ve “made it.”
