As a photographer, there are moments you capture that become more meaningful with time. These photos were taken during the annual crossing of the Edmund Pettus Bridge, a place forever connected to the struggle for voting rights and equality in America.

That day, I had the honor of photographing civil rights icon John Lewis. Decades earlier, he stood on this very bridge as a young activist, risking his life on what became known as “Bloody Sunday.” His courage helped change the course of American history and inspired generations to continue the fight for justice.

Just a few months after these photographs were taken, Congressman John Lewis passed away on July 17, 2020. Looking back, I realize these images are more than photographs—they are pieces of history. They capture a living legend returning to a place that symbolized both sacrifice and hope.

John Lewis often reminded us to get into “good trouble, necessary trouble.” His legacy continues to challenge us to stand up for what is right, speak out against injustice, and never give up on creating a better future.

I am grateful to have documented this moment and to preserve a small part of the legacy of a man whose impact will never be forgotten.
