So another short clip from one of the NASCAR reels.....I posted it on a NASCAR history page and got a lot of answers about the clip...I had it as the 1969 Trenton Speedway, Northern 300...because of a shot of some signage...but there were 2 races on the reel...and I posted the first part. So this is the 1969 Mason-Dixon 300 at Dover Downs. Pretty sweet...I slowed the play down as Richard Petty screams by the stands....the car right behind him is #90 Sonny Hutchins. Petty finished first that day and Hutchins came in second....several laps behind Petty. I love Petty standing on the hood of his car putting his sunglasses on with his arm around some chicks! Total winner!

So...the clip I posted of the NASCAR race.. I had labeled as the 1969 Trenton Speedway, Northern 300. I pulled the whole reel into After Effects and am in the process of doing a treatment to label all the drivers...since there are a ton of heavy's. But I kept running into problems with the timeline of the race and the roster. After a ton of Google, Gemini and old fashioned web scouring sessions...I have the correct race...It's the Daytona 500...1976. Petty's car setup/markings and his ending up in the grass was what gave me the correct answer. More to come. On a side note the reel also has footage from the Trenton Times Auto Classic..a NASCAR National Championship Modified Division race. I will post some of that, once I clean it up...Crazy looking cars man!

This old external SCSI drive actually spun up...no smoke or anything...no funny smells. If I get sometime, I might boot up an old Power Mac...and see what all still works. I would be very excited to see if any data is still readable. keeping both finger crossed.

So, while scanning through FB Marketplace for lost treasures, I notice a reemergence of vintage Apple tech....the old macs have always been there for sale, its just that the prices are edging up...especially for the older Motorola 68040 machines. Unfortunately I did not become a Apple computer hoarder until my first Power Mac and G series computers. So my favorite old machine Quadra800 got donated to something stupid. But I'm also seeing more peripherals for sale. So I thought to myself...I need to dig into "The SCSI storage bins from Hell" I am halfway through the stash and was surprised at how much stuff still powers on. I cracked the cases on most things and looked for leaking caps....blew out all the dust. This is a sweet little Apple CD-ROM drive....got the green light and thought the tray is not ejecting so it must be broken.....but I remembered the early drives needed a caddy to insert the disc in.....crazy!

So I digitized all 5 of the short Super8 film reels from the NASCAR I bought and was not disappointed. There is so much going on, need to start a journal just to get all the details down. This is a short clip from one of the reels. The race is the 1969 Northern 300 at Trenton Speedway, which took place on July 13, 1969. The cars are all doing the formation lap, waiting to get started. I identified as many numbers as I could and let Gemini give me the roster of the race that day. Very impressive! The King is in there...Petty was dominating the early portion of the race at Trenton, pacing the field in that blue #15 Ford Torino. He brought the car down pit road initially because he felt the engine losing power and starting to sour. After trying to nurse the car back out, the engine let go completely. It blew an oil line or put a rod through the oil pan, dumping slick fluids directly onto his own rear tires. With zero traction, the blue Ford swapped ends and slid forcefully into the infield grass. Because the engine was completely destroyed and locked up, he couldn't drive it back. The flatbed/wrecker had to hoist the front end of the #43 and tow it back into the garage area. Petty was officially credited with a 25th-place finish due to engine failure after completing 111 laps.

I share in his joubliation…..the mail was just delivered, and I have 5 old Super 8 reel of film. All of them according to the thumbnails on the eBay sale are footage of different famous old NASCAR races. In one thumbnails it shows a #43 blue and orange car coming into the pits….I am getting excited:)

So on that last post with the Roadside America clip, I got a lot of response from people who had been there as kids and wanted to see more from that place. Unfortunately the little bit of what I think was inside footage was unusable. but on the same reel there was what I am guessing was a Cub Scouts troop visiting a place called Mystic Seaport a maritime museum in Mystic, Connecticut, and the largest in the United States. I'm sure it's way bigger now. Since this was at the end of the Roadside America clip the date is probably the same...1959 - 62ish!

So with the Record vinyl digitizing hardware all completed, it’s time to get the software side nailed down. The raw files are being exported from a legacy version of Audacity…but the cleanup is being done Adobe Audition on my M2 Mac Studio. I picked out 6 or 7 albums that were my Moms. She gave me them along with the Pioneer stereo components. I figured I’ll use them as a testing exercise. Her birthday is coming up later this month, she will really enjoy hearing some of this classical music again.

So the two big reels that I bought on Poshmark several weeks ago turn out to be pretty cool. I knew it was old looking at it, but AI nail all of the cars in the shot...with some release dates and body types, putting the film at 1959 to early 60s and the building in the shot was the Roadside America in Shartlesville, Pennsylvania...it was opened in 1953...but the exhibits inside were created in 1935. Another victim of Covid....they never recovered from that and closed the doors for good in late 2020. I'll post more later!
