You can buy attention. You cannot buy connection.

You can have millions of eyeballs on your brand and still have absolutely no connection.

This I will TRIPLE down on.

Somewhere along the way, brands started confusing marketing with connection. Now we’re paying for interactions that were never genuine to begin with and there are more diluted brands than genuine ones.

We’re flooding social feeds with “UGC” that isn’t actually user-generated. We’re paying influencers to simulate authentic enthusiasm. We’re manufacturing conversations that look organic but are built on transactions.

And that’s the problem.

I’m not against marketing.

I’m against marketing that’s pretending to be connection.

Because connection can’t be bought.

It can’t be scripted.

It can’t be manufactured.

Because the real KPI isn’t impressions.

It isn’t reach.

It isn’t engagement.

It’s movement.

Did someone experience your brand deeply enough that they chose to carry it forward without being asked?

That’s connection.

People don’t become advocates because you paid them to post.

They become advocates because something about your brand became part of their story.

That’s the difference between building awareness…

…and building a brand people actually believe in.

How does someone help shape hospitality culture on a global scale?

For William E. Avitia, Vice President of Learning Products at Forbes Travel Guide, the answer may have started long before his career ever did.

In this conversation, we explore how growing up in a Mexican American family in Texas—where his grandmother's recipes, family traditions, and gathering around the table were a way of life—helped shape the lens through which he experiences hospitality today.

From my perspective, expertise is rarely built through professional experience alone. It's also shaped by the values, traditions, and human experiences that quietly teach us what it feels like to make people feel welcome, connected, and cared for—or, just as importantly, what it feels like when they don't.

You have studied it.
Practiced it.
Repeated it.
Refined it.

Eventually, it becomes embodied.

It is not just what you know.

It is what you have embodied deeply enough to recognize without needing to stop and think.
