Kirk Brandau Photography I'm a landscape and nature photographer. I really enjoy night photography, whether it's in the City or way out in the middle of no where.

Photography is all about the light, and how you treat it.

The McDonald Observatory and Visitor Center is always a great place to capture the night sky. This visit was different for me, with the milky way and the moon both being visible. The moon was about 33% illumination, lighting up the area with a nice ambient light, and the milky way showing off for all who are willing to view it.

The Davis Mountains State Park - Texas Parks and Wildlife has so many places to capture the night sky. I really loved my last trip out to the Davis Mountains and the Chihuahuan Desert. The milky way was visible while a crescent moon made it's descent in the western sky, providing the ambient light for the terrain. Taken 7/13/2024.

I usually setup to create time lapse videos of the milky way, but that limits the various compositions you can create in one night, so this time while I was in the desert, I attempted to get as many compositions with the milky way as I could. Starting about 90 minutes after sunset the milky way becomes visible, and that's when I start trying to collect as many different images of the milky way as I can.

Here's some of my favorites from the Marfa, Texas area. 7/11/2024

I spent a few nights camped at the Davis Mountains State Park - Texas Parks and Wildlife last week and on the first night I was there, they hosted a Star Party up on Skyline Drive. Ranger Charlie is well informed and shared his knowledge of the Chihuahuan Desert sky with fellow visitors of the Texas Parks and Wildlife. I was glad that the milky way made it's appearance during the Star Party, even though I think most people might have missed it, because the sky was also lit bit a 33% illuminated moon, but the camera caught it. Ranger Charlie was surprised when I showed him the photos I had taken during his discussion. Thank you to the Texas Parks and Wildlife volunteers!

I've expanded my adventure season to include summer now. Now I can remain cool while sleeping with the addition of this air conditioned little Runaway Campers now I can go to the desert or any other hot destination without hesitation as long as I've got a place to plug in. This "new to me" camper is very well built and only takes away 4mpg off my gas mileage. Taken 7/10/2024 in the Davis Mountains in west Texas.
