Knowing the Mass is just the start. Here’s how to actually get First Communion photos you’ll love forever.

Before Mass even starts, and for each liturgical event—including reception of the Eucharist—your photographer needs to already be in position, not figuring it out when the moment comes.

First Communion lasts about 4 seconds, with no do-overs.

For lighting, we all have to use whatever we’re given . . . window light, sanctuary lamps, etc. On-camera flash usually just kills the beauty, not to mention gets you banned from that church.

A photographer who knows how to read available light and make the most of a photo in post-processing will give you something that actually feels like that day.

For portraits, make a shot list before you get there. Immediate family first, then extended. Hand it to your photographer before Mass.

You get through it in 20 minutes and nobody is melting down in the parking lot.

And tell your photographer upfront: I want the candids. The tears. The quiet moments. The look on their face. If they’re only thinking about posed shots, you’ll get portraits but lose the whole story.

That’s what gets you photos you’ll still be pulling out in 20 years.

How to get your child ready for their First Communion?

Catholic parents across the Diocese of Austin are preparing right now, and if it’s stressful, it’s probably because they are focusing on the wrong things.

What actually matters:
• The preparation starts long before the day. •
• Your child should understand what the Eucharist is . . . not just the ritual of receiving it, but what the Church teaches is happening at that moment. Talk about it at home, simply and directly. Children absorb more than we expect.
• Practice receiving. Whether your parish receives on the tongue or in the hand, do it at home until it’s comfortable. Standing before the priest is not the place to figure it out.
• Confirm your parish’s specific requirements early: dress code, rehearsal dates, arrival time. Every parish in the Diocese of Austin runs First Communion differently.

What doesn’t matter as much as you think:
The dress. The party. The decorations. These are beautiful, but they’re not what your child will remember in twenty years.

What the ceremony looks like:
First Communion typically happens during a regular Sunday Mass or a dedicated parish Mass in April or May. Your child will process in with their class, sit together, and receive the Eucharist for the first time during the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The Mass runs 60-90 minutes. Family gathers after.

The moment itself is quieter than most parents expect. And more powerful.

How to preserve it:
• Portraits of your child before Mass—just them, before the morning gets busy. • Documentation during the Mass, within your parish’s guidelines. Family and group portraits after, when everyone is together and the moment has settled. That’s the full story of the day.
