Built between 1903 and 1904, it was designed by noted architect James Riely Gordon in the Classical Revival and Beaux Arts styles. It stands as the only Beaux Arts courthouse in southwest Mississippi.

The brick and stone structure features an impressive octagonal dome complete with a clock, a Greek cross layout, corner entrances, and a detailed interior rotunda with two balconies showcasing an inlaid county seal.

The surrounding Courthouse Square is shaded by ancient live oaks, including the famous Jefferson Davis Oak, which has stood on the grounds for over 200 years.

St. Matthew High School is a historic former African-American school located in Melrose, Louisiana.
Built in 1952, it was the first public high school constructed for Black students in Lower Natchitoches Parish before it closed in 1989.
The school originated in 1916 as a "church school" held at the neighboring St. Matthew Baptist Church.
In 1952, it opened as one of only two public senior high schools for African-Americans in all of Natchitoches Parish.
The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
