MOTHER’S DAY

The celebration of mothers can be traced back to ancient Greece and Rome honoring the mother of their gods. Our Native Indians celebrated Mother Earth with a feast in the Fall, to thank her for receiving her bountiful foods.

Ann Reeves Jarvis, a peace activist during the Civil War, organized a group that fostered reconciliation between the war’s divided communities. After her death, her daughter, Anna, pursued her mother’s mission in recognizing the sacrifices and contribution that all mothers made. Both Philadelphia and Grafton, W.V celebrated Mother’s Day on May 10, 1908. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day, in 1914, in honor and recognizing the importance of mothers.

HAPPY MOTHER’ DAY to all mothers who love and sacrifice for their biological children, their adopted child, the foster mother, giving love and security to a needy child and to stepmothers, stepping in to care for her spouse’s child.
