I've been posting photos of lots of old country stores in the last couple of weeks. One of my favorites was the Bob & Bob Spleleo general Store in Sinks Grove, Monroe County, WV. It served the community, as well as cavers worldwide through mail order. It's been repurposed, as The Hunkerdown, a coffeehouse and bakery. This photo dates cack to the spring of 2020. Shain Young & Co. General Merchandise, Pine K**b, Grayson County, KY. was established in 1907 as the second store in the small town. It was built by 18 members of the Shain, Young, and White families. In 1931, rising creek water washed the store several hundred feet, where it lodged against a tree. Logs were laid on the ground and horses and mules were used to pull it back to its foundation. The store changed hands several times until it burned in 1935. The store in the picture, on the original foundation, is a replica built by Honus Shain Jr., in 2019, as a tribute to his family, many of which were involved with the building and operation of the original store. The Finney Hotel in Woodbury, Butler County, KY, dates to 1867. The hotel played an important role in the economic development of Woodbury as a river town, catering to riverboat travelers on the Green River. It was operated by Lethia Finney between about 1911 her death in 1945. By 1950, the hotel no longer served travelers and had become a private residence. It eventually fell in disuse, and only a wooden skeleton remains to attest to the old hotel's importance to the town. The old Finney Hotel is said to be haunted by the ghost of a little girl that local lore suggests was murdered there. Driving Backroads.

I was headed home Friday afternoon and decided to drop by the Bill Monroe Homeplace, Rosine, Ohio County, KY, to see if I could get a shot of towering thunderclouds behind the home. While abundant that day, the clouds didn't cooperate by being at the right location for the shot I wanted. However, the light was good and there were some clouds, so I snapped a shot before heading back to the house. Driving Backrroads.

Ceralvo Methodist Church, perched on a hill high above the Green River, in Ohio County, KY, dates to 1897 and replaced an earlier structure built in 1873 which had burned. As with the first building, it served as a school and Masonic Lodge. A new school was built in 1925, and freed up the building for a Methodist Church, which served the community until sometime in the 1950s. The building continued as a Masonic Lodge until 2005. It is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Driving Backroads.

Towering thunderclouds appeared yesterday afternoon over western Kentucky. Here, they serve as a backdrop for the Rosine Barn Jamboree, a historic music venue in Ohio County, the boyhood home of Bill Monroe, the "Father of Bluegrass." Driving Backroads.
