It’s been 25 years, and it’s still very difficult to talk about. Actually, when I think about it, I don’t believe I’ve ever told anyone outside my immediate family. With all the attention now on the Clancy case, I thought it might be time. I was in my 20s when I got pregnant with my first daughter. I wanted to start a family more than anything. I had a successful career as a trader on Wall Street, but all I wanted was to start a family. What happened to me after giving birth was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to overcome, and yes, even harder than fighting cancer. Let me start by saying that unless you have had postpartum psychosis, you CAN NOT understand what is happening. Even after having been through it, it’s difficult to comprehend. When the intrusive thoughts began, I felt more scared than I’d ever been. It’s not depression. It’s not “baby blues.” It’s much stronger and more powerful than that. It’s not your own voice. You know that voice you hear that tells you two glasses of wine is enough, or that maybe you shouldn’t have that second slice of cake? It’s a voice that’s not yours, stronger and uglier than you can imagine. A voice telling you to do unthinkable things. Things you don’t want to do, but it takes every cell in your body to fight for your life and the life of your child.Like Lindsay, I went to a doctor who prescribed the wrong medication that made things worse. I  was getting weaker and less able to fight with every day.
I looked my husband in the eye and told him that I could NOT be left alone. He understood that I was desperate. He may not have understood exactly what I was going through..how could he? But he knew me. He knew I loved our little family. So we called our village. My mother and father left their home in PA to come stay with us. They came to stay so that I would never be left alone with my baby. They didn’t come for a weekend or a week..they stayed for months. Because that’s how long it took for my body and mind to heal, for my psychosis to disappear. You may think, how can you possibly hurt your babies? You can’t understand..But you must listen to postpartum moms who are crying out for help! They need to find their village 💔

I know people say some kids have an “old soul,” but every now and then you witness something that really makes you wonder.

Most big siblings during newborn sessions are excited but understandably a little nervous about holding the baby. And honestly, I know a lot of adults who still don’t feel comfortable holding a newborn!

But this sweet big sister? She held both of her newborn siblings like it was the most natural thing in the world. So calm. So gentle. So confident. There wasn’t an ounce of hesitation.

Watching her made me wonder where that kind of wisdom comes from. Is it just her personality? Is it intuition? Do you believe some children come into this world carrying something a little deeper... maybe even from another life?

I can’t help but think about these things sometimes.

What do you think? Do you believe in old souls or past lives?

Parenthood changes everything.

Last night around 10, I was talking to my neighbor over the backyard fence. He’s in that stage of parenting where life just feels busy all the time. The house is covered in toys, there’s never enough time in the day, and you’re constantly needed.

He’s such a hands-on dad, and you can tell how much he loves his little girls. Parenting is exhausting, messy, and overwhelming... but it’s also full of so much joy.

Those are the moments I love getting to capture. The chaos, the love, the little in-between moments you’ll want to remember someday. It’s what makes me love this job more and more.

Can’t wait to meet this sweet new baby brother this weekend! Newborn sessions with older siblings are always so much fun. There are so many changes happening for them, and it’s important to make them feel just as special and included as we celebrate their growing family.

It was so hard picking favorites from this spring maternity session!
I got to photograph some beautiful mamas-to-be these last few months, and honestly, it never stops feeling special. Watching families in this in-between season before everything changes is the sweetest thing.
The little kisses on mommy’s belly, the excitement of becoming a big brother or sister, all the anticipation and love already there before baby even arrives!
And getting to see families come back…from their first newborn session to becoming a family of four…that part will truly never get old for me.

Every newborn session feels like a soft pause….a gentle reminder of what really matters.
