There are very few sports in which you don't see a huge rivalry between Governor Livingston and New Providence High Schools, on the ice that changes, with hockey being an extreme exception were the neighboring towns team up to compete in New Jersey's Co-Op section.
It's a partnership that has brought great scucces, as in the past 4 years the GLNP Hockey has made the trip to the Rock 3 times, bringing home the Public Co-Op title twice, and losing most recently in 2024.
Last season was the first time in four years that the Highlanders failed to make it to the Prudential Center, falling just short in the South Co-Op final. This year as the Highlanders get ready to go into Union County Tournament Play they are a bit off the mark to where they were the prior three years, being below .500.
Of course the record doesn't tell the whole story, GLNP has managed to pull within a one goal margin or tie in the third period of 5 of their 8 loses this season. This speaks of a team that knows how to fight, but unfortunately they've let go late just a few times too many, including against Bergen Catholic
Despite this the Highlanders sit in playoff position in the South Public Co-Op, and are promised at least a win or two in the UCT, potentially giving them even better positioning. With the tough schedule they tote, even a competitive loss has the chance to push them higher in the standing with the power point system in play, and every spot matters.
In this one the squad didn't get so lucky falling 6-3 to Bergen Catholic after 4 unanswered goals from the Crasaders in the 3rd period.
