As someone who has managed and built social media accounts professionally for the last roughly 14 years, and knowing as I do that you never put too much weight on one particular platform over another, because you do not own it, and you have no control over what happens to it, I know that fundamentally speaking, I should be able to walk away from TikTok with no emotion, but the truth of the matter is that it was the one platform where I truly felt like I could be myself, share content that I would not share anywhere else, and where I had truly found a community, and a social platform that actually turned into tangible actionable monetary financially beneficial, leads, and bookings, completely organically. Other than my time, I never spent a dollar to promote my work, my behind the scenes, or anything else on TikTok, and it managed to in some years account for about 10% of my revenue with the leads that it generated. That’s a significant number for a small business like mine.
I remember pushing all of you guys, Photographersespecially, to get on there, create accounts, and start making content. For a hot minute, I was literally the only Key West photographer, posting anything on the platform, and when you searched , my videos for probably about a year and a half to two years if I’m remembering correctly , were only all of MY videos! Finally, the rest of you caught on, and I had a little bit of competition, which is as it should be.
I remember posting on this very channel my progress in follower account and how my videos have been doing as somewhat of a case study.
I ended up amassing over 22,000 followers…
My largest following on any social platform… Over 1 million likes on my content…
So many creators that I followed, and that followed me, I found amazing team members on there, had the biggest belly laughs, would cry tears of empathy over others stories, And just generally like to go there and hang out for a little bit every day. I learned so much, met so many interesting people, made so many unique connections, and it has just really been a source of joy as well as a tool for my business.
Anyway, my point of this post is not to opine over the potential loss of TikTok tomorrow (although NGL I’m gonna ride this ship all the way to the end and binge watch my favorite creators til they turn the lights off), it’s actually to let any of my fellow small businesses know this…
if you have spent any amount of time creating content for TikTok, and you need a way to download all of your videos, watermark free, so that you can repurpose them on other channels, there is a tool that I discovered and used myself today called MyFaveTT.
It is a Chrome extension that you will need to install, and then what you will need to do is go into your own TikTok account, and go through your own videos, favorite them… Using the little*tab*looking icon on the bottom right, and once you have all of your own videos in your favorites, you can log onto the myfaveTT chrome extension in your Internet browser, using your TikTok username and password, and it will connect to your account, and it will download all of the videos in your favorites.
Now, it is not lost on me that if you have favorited videos from other creators over the years, that it is also going to download those as well. Listen, I’m not saying it’s a glorious and perfect solution, but if you don’t want to spend the next several hours manually downloading videos to your phone, this is what you have to do.
If you want to delete those extra favorites that you don’t need later, be my guest. But, at least you will have all of yours, and then you can cross pollinate them to YouTube shorts, bluesky, hopefully Neptune if/when it comes out, or if you’re feeling really adventurous and want to join me over on RedNote, come on in, the mandarin water is fine. Lol.

But back to the original topic of this post… Wherever you end up, don’t forget to also be curating your email list, building a newsletter, and diversifying your social media portfolio.
And for anyone who has enjoyed my TikTok content over the years, I hope you will continue to do so via my other channels.
I have unfortunately slept on YouTube shorts for far too long, so I will probably move the majority of my short form content over there, but will also be hanging out more on BlueSky and whatever ATProto language they’re building called SkyLight if and when that is ready.
