Excited about this one - a big ol’ frosty bison at sunrise! I’ve been wanting to prioritize getting a great bison shot for a while, since at dawn I tend to rush past bison hoping for a bear around the next bend 😂 This scene caught my eye though - there were a few bulls grazing near some thermal features, and since it was a cold morning, the steam clung and froze on their fur and their breath was visible. It made a beautiful scene that I’m so glad I stopped for!

The phantom of the North 🖤 this past weekend I had an incredible opportunity to photograph this Great Gray Owl in Yellowstone. It was only the second encounter I’ve ever had with a Great Gray, despite years of searching. I couldn’t believe my eyes! It moved completely silently and flew from perch to perch as it hunted in the field below.

We were tracking a coyote through Lamar Valley when we noticed a second coyote hunting not far away. As their paths converged, we wondered how they would interact - were they competitors? When the two finally got close enough to see each other, the most joyful wild moment I’ve ever witnessed unfolded. The female got visibly excited, tucked her tail, and started nuzzling, licking, and hugging the male. For several moments, they rolled in the grass and showed affection for each other. It was obvious they were partners, mated for life, and an inspection of the female’s underbelly told us they were both out hunting for their litter of pups. Reunited, they trotted off down the valley together.

A closer look at Beryl (left) and one of her “teenagers”. Beryl has continued to defy grizzly norms by keeping her cubs with her into their subadult years. Most grizzly mothers kick their cubs out at 2.5 years old, but Beryl’s cubs are 3.5 and still traveling alongside her.

It’s touching that she has kept her cubs close by for an extra year, and it’s an exciting sight to see them all together - the cubs are barely smaller than their mother!

The past few days in the park were unbelievable! I was thrilled to get an up close moment with Beryl and her 2 huge cubs.

Photos 2-4 show the day before, when we witnessed an interesting dynamic between Beryl’s family and a subadult bear trying to hang around them. Beryl and her cubs did not seem to want the extra company.

I heard the subadult may be one of Obsidian’s cubs from a few years ago - the final photo here is a closer look at that bear the following morning, after Beryl and her cubs had gone their separate way.

It was such a joy to share all of this grizzly excitement with my parents while they were visiting!

I love when a plan comes together… with only 48 free hours in Salt Lake City, I was thrilled to be able to see the Onaqui Wild Horse herd the first morning and then this great horned owl in Antelope Island State Park the second! Paul and I were hiking around searching for owls and it was music to my ears when he said, “oh, there’s one”.
