Happy 80th Birthday to my dear friend, John Payne!

If you ever have the pleasure of meeting John, you’ll quickly discover that he’s one of the most kindhearted, supportive, and genuinely loving people you’ll ever know. He’s the kind of person who celebrates your wins, big or small, like they’re his own.

A true Appalachian native, John is a treasure trove of stories, wisdom, and good humor. Every Wednesday night, he comes to AMB open mic and plays traditional Appalachian tunes with his buddies. He’s a highlight of my week, always bringing a smile and a song. This week was my first time meeting his family and one thing I love the most about photographing events like this, is being able to see a beautiful community love and celebrate each other. I noticed that John’s family and friends come from all different backgrounds but all connect through music in some way. They were all eager to help and make this day as special as it could be for John.

A few fun facts about John:
- He was close friends with Doc and Merle Watson and even used to drive Doc to shows.
- He insists on buying your beer or your pizza, every time.
- He’s built many houses in his life and built some with Merle.

John, you’re one of a kind. Here’s to 80 wonderful years, and many more to come!
