Alicia came into the studio this week — a little nervous, but totally ready.

She stepped in front of the lens for the first time in a long time, and together we created something quiet, powerful, and real. There’s a beauty in showing up for yourself, especially when it’s not easy.

Before my 3rd Thru-Hike of the Appalachian Trail I drove from Massachusetts to Georgia searching for hikers and trail angels to shoot portraits of. One day I drove up to New Found Gap on the NC/TN border in the Smokey Mountains and saw a young hiker hobbling down the road. I immediately ran over to help. He is an amputee and his prosthetic leg had broken at the ankle. I was like jump in my car let’s go. We drove into Pigeon Forge, Tennessee and found an Ace Hardware. After a little bit of searching he found some bolts that fit and made the necessary repairs. This was shot in the motel room I got for us that night using natural light.

Thru Hiker I photographed in the Three Eagles Outfitters .This was in their small satellite store across from the Budget Inn in Franklin N.C . This young lady got homesick and went home early to be with her high school sweetheart. The Appalachian trail is not an easy place to be in the spring. A lot of hikers encounter snowstorms and sometimes blizzard conditions, cold, illness and injury. In this case love got in the way of one of the hardest trails in the country. .

At approximately 30 miles north of the Southern Terminus of The Appalachian trail is Mountain Crossings an old stone building that houses an Outfitter and Hostel. The Appalachian Trail runs right through it and another 2,150 miles to the Northern Terminus on top of Mt Katahdin.
