I'm thrilled to share that my work is featured in Sidetracked Magazine, Vol. 36 — a beautiful print publication I have admired for years for its commitment to authentic storytelling and stunning visuals.
Sidetracked has long set the bar for how adventure and exploration stories should be told: with depth, humility, and an eye for the intimate moments that make it all worthwhile.
To have a story of my own in its pages is a genuinely amazing. This has long been a goal

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

I am still pinching myself that this happened! .anjanettedecarlo and I were unexpectedly given the opportunity to present a Flag Return for our expedition in Ethiopia this past weekend at the Global Meetup.
Being granted a flag to carry into the field was already prestigious and thrilling. Presenting the work to our fellow members was amazing. Fortunately, it only hit me after our talk.
Thank you for the 🎥

New work out with the
(PART 2) In January I spent a few weeks in Eastern Ethiopia, on the Somali border, with researchers .anjanettedecarlo, Stephen Johnson, Dr Yeshimebet Ayele Tegenie, and .g.osborn, documenting their research and the state of myrrh in the region. The AP picked up an article about the severe drought and its impact on myrrh and communities which rely upon it.

This is a story I was drawn to because it holds so many meaningful threads key to the human experience — environment, agriculture, culture, and humanitarian stakes, all inextricably intertwined. And I am endlessly fascinated by people's relationship to the land, and by communities living close to their ancestral ways.

Thank you to editor for championing this work, Cara Anna editing my text, the research team, and most of all to the communities in eastern Ethiopia who let us into their lives.

Last share out of moments from Ethiopia with flag 136 and .
This is beautiful part of the world I very much how to return to. Although I travel to photograph different people and cultures, what always strikes me the most is how we have so much more in common than our difference.
All around the world people want to live in safety, to have access to food and water, to healthcare and education, the ability to exercise free will and the opportunity to support their families with dignity.
I am forever grateful that I get to travel and immerse myself in so many cultures. I only wish more people could understand our similarities so we might stop vilifying “the other.”

Who do you bring on an expedition to uncover the myrrh resin supply chain, document tree ecology and understand communal uses in rural Ethiopia?
The expedition team was led by Anjanette DeCarlo and Stephen Johnson, founders of Save Frankincense. Dr DeCarlo is an expert in sustainable supply chains & a professor at the UVM business school. Johnson is an expert in resins and owner of Fair Source Botanicals in Oman.
Additional core team members included Ethiopians, Dr Yeshimebet Ayele Tegenie, a forestry, development & natural resource economics expert, and natural resources and sustainable development specialist, Abdinasir Abdikadir Aweys .n.aways. And American Sam Osborn a doctoral student in Theology, Ethics, and Philosophy at BU.
A multidisciplinary and international team for a complex story!

The Explorers Club is a historic, multidisciplinary society dedicated to the advancement of field research, scientific exploration and resource conservation. While all members of The Explorers Club are engaged in exploration, only a small percentage are granted the privilege of carrying one of our historic flags into the field.
We were granted flag 136 for our January Expedition to study myrrh in Ethiopia. This was the first time Anjanette DeCarlo, Stephen Johnson and I (all members) have been on a flag expedition. The rest of the team, who also carried the flag, is hoping to apply to the club soon.

To most people frankincense and myrrh come only from a biblical Christmas story, of three wise men bringing gifts to baby Jesus. But the truth, as always is far richer and more complex.
Frankincense and myrrh are precious resins, hardened tree saps, which have been central to daily, spiritual life, and trade, in the Horn of Africa and the Middle East for thousands of years. In January I traveled with a team studying myrrh, which is less understood, in Somali Ethiopia.
Life in Somali Ethiopia is extraordinarily difficult, a compounded by climate change induced drought. But people generously opened their communities and homes and to shared their knowledge with us.
