The hypnotic, driving singular force of Water Damage could not be stopped by a random stage invader (not pictured, maybe later). Kowloon Walled City reminded me of the bludgeoning power of Tar, crossed with the angular guitar work of Unwound. Glad I finally caught them. Denver’s own Abandons crafted a swirling vortex of post rock and brought their own light snow. Just caught the final song of Watch Yourself Die and that was quite the song, wished I’d been a bit more punctual.

Day 3 of Ghost Canyon kicked off with some intimate performances at Bug Theatre, including the inscrutable Daniel Higgs, the mesmerizing found sounds collage of Claire Rousay, Shane Parish’s intrepid mapping of Autechre songs to the acoustic guitar, and Nora Mal’s jazz/rock songs.

The second day of Ghost Canyon was filled with surprises and a wide-ranging spectrum of music. The in-stores at Wax Trax were great and the shop packed to the rafters. As the event shifted to the Hi Dive, stellar sets were the norm. Steve Von Till brought the evening to a charged, emotional close. Silkworm sounded amazing and obv have had fun playing with The Gotobeds as both Tim and Eli joined the other band for lead vocals. The languid stylings of Dust Congress were in stark contrast to the sharp, biting attack of Supreme Joy. More to come!

The first day of Ghost Canyon kicked in grand style at HQ last night, with a freewheeling solo set from Emil Amos and excellent support from Kathryn Mohr and sun swept 🌞 / Ryan Wong duo, after a spirited panel discussion on the current state of music and how AI is impacting it. More excellent shows booked today at Wax Trax Records and Hi-Dive so get out there!

ZZ Top are certainly one of the 10 best US bands... sad to hear Frank Beard has bid us goodbye. I only got to see them once but my older brother had a copy of El Loco that I still have borrowed from him and that led me down the rabbit hole. Amazing discography, iconic band.
