🎥 POV: I decided to lean into telling stories through film this summer.

Somewhere between aperture + focus, light + shadow, movement + stillness, I realized I wasn’t only learning my camera but I was learning another way to see.

Grateful for these early July learning labs with my good sis Valerie Anselme of Valerie Anselme | Editorial & Portrait Photographer as I prepared to head to the Poconos, PA to film Embodied Legacies Black DMT: The Untold Stories of Black Healers in Dance/Movement Therapy.

There’s something humbling + beautiful about becoming a beginner again, letting curiosity lead while your hands are still learning the language of the lens.

This summer has been about stretching my storytelling from stills into movement, deepening my relationship with my camera + trusting my creative eye in new ways.

Still learning. Still experimenting. Still finding my cinematic voice.

But leaning in.

self-care for creatives + embodied movers can often time feel far reaching, as if it were only an endless desire…

yesterday I got to get away + simply be…be in nature which I love… be with my own uninterrupted thoughts which I have missed… + most humbling… be in my body as I along with a number of other black + brown creatives + movement practitioners spent the day at the , one of the sweetest gems here in Massachusetts

deep gratitude to my fellow mover + light of a being for extending this invitation to me. i keep saying it. this was soooooooo timely + needed. that spaciousness was truly enriching.

Reflections on Motherhood

Motherhood as lineage. Motherhood as becoming. Motherhood as a return to self.

This Mother’s Day, we honor our Birthlooms Storyteller Charlotte Shook + her breathtaking reflection on naming, Black motherhood, daughtering, healing + reclaiming joy.

“What’s in a name?
My name is history.
My name is an endless prayer from my ancestors.”

Through Reflections on Motherhood in .tdp, Charlotte reminds us that motherhood is not only about raising children, it is about tending to the generations before us, the little girl within us + the futures we are building in real time.

Her story moves through memory + lineage, through the sacred weight of names passed down across generations of Black women wrapped in “memory, legacy, and love.” It asks what it means to mother while healing, to nurture while learning yourself anew, to become both refuge and freedom for your children.

“That’s the kind of mother I want to be.
Not perfect. Not always calm.
But the kind of mom… because she’ll call anyway.
Because it feels like home.”

Through her children Manny + Myla, Charlotte writes Black motherhood as inheritance, protection, softness, resistance + prayer. Her words hold the tenderness of nursing a daughter in the quiet dark, the fierce protection of raising a Black son full of light + the ongoing journey of reclaiming herself beyond survival.

“It feels like healing.
It feels like a homecoming.
A return to me.
Finally finding my pink again.”

Today we honor the mothers, daughters, aunties, grandmothers + villages who remind us that motherhood is never meant to be carried alone. We honor the women learning to pour back into themselves while raising worlds inside + around them.

“Hi, my name is Solèy,” you told me.

Journey with us this Mother’s Day through the tenderness, prayer + living rhythms of our Birthlooms Storyteller, Mardia Pierre.

This Mother’s Day, we honor motherhood as an intimate call and response, a sacred dialogue between mother and child, spirit and body, survival and joy. Through Mardia’s story in .tdp, Letters to My Daughter, we are reminded that mothering can be prayer, softness, memory, creativity + the continual act of returning to ourselves with grace.

“You can trust me with your rage.”

Her story carries us through dreams, pregnancy, postpartum, artistry, mental health, community care + the sacred everyday moments that shape Black motherhood. Through letters to her daughter Solèy, Mardia offers a deeply honest reflection on love, healing, vulnerability + the beauty of creating new ways of being.

“What a beautiful privilege it is to create a new normal.”

From singing lullabies and summer walks to navigating her bipolar diagnosis, exhaustion + the shifting tides of motherhood, Mardia reminds us that Black mothers deserve softness, support, rest + the freedom to exist fully in our complexity.

“It’s okay to ebb and flow with grace and change.”

Her words honor the power of prayer not only as religion, but as ritual, imagination, art, stillness, laughter + survival. They remind us that healing is not linear + that community care can become the bridge that carries us back to ourselves.

“Like a soothing balm my community showed up…”

Today we celebrate the mothers, artists, dreamers, caregivers + community members who continue to hold one another through life’s changing tides with tenderness, honesty + love.

Journey with us this Mother’s Day through the awakening, unraveling + rebirth of our Birthlooms Storyteller, Lanisha Harrison.

This Mother’s Day, we honor motherhood as both a sacred arrival and a profound confrontation with self. Through Lanisha’s story in .tdp, Siraad: A Pivot to the Awakening, we are reminded that birth can crack us open, illuminating not only new life, but also the parts of ourselves still longing to be held, healed + understood.

“Parenting him means re-parenting me.”

Her story carries us through unexpected pregnancy, the realities of postpartum transformation, the loneliness that can exist even within partnership + the sacred work of facing inherited wounds while choosing something different for our children.

“I want to be the difference.”

From the cold operating room at Boston Medical Center to the quiet grief of postpartum disconnection, Lanisha’s words speak honestly about the emotional complexities many mothers carry in silence. Yet even amid exhaustion, fear + uncertainty, she continually chooses light.

“I can give him what I didn’t have.
Not perfection, but presence.”

Through Siraad, meaning Light, Lanisha begins a journey of awakening, one rooted in truth-telling, community care, self-reflection + the courage to no longer carry everything alone. Her story reminds us that healing is not linear, and motherhood often asks us to meet the younger versions of ourselves with tenderness for the very first time.

“There’s no running anymore.
No numbing, no hiding, only truth.”

Journey with us this Mother’s Day through the tenderness, transformation + becoming of our Birthlooms Storyteller, Joëlle Fontaine.

This Mother’s Day, we honor motherhood as a journey that reshapes us completely, body, spirit, identity + purpose. Through Joëlle’s story in .tdp, Raising Isaiah, we are reminded that birth is not only the arrival of a child, but also the unfolding of a new self.

“My son and I grew up together.”

Her story carries us through the uncertainty of young motherhood, the silence held inside trauma, the profound grief of losing an old version of self, and the radical love that emerges when we allow ourselves to be transformed by mothering.

“My silence wasn’t evidence of ease; it was a trauma response.”

Joëlle’s words offer an honest reflection on Black womanhood, survival + the ways many of us learn to mask pain while carrying impossible expectations of strength. Yet through Isaiah, she found a space where masking could no longer survive, only truth, vulnerability + unconditional love.
