The Endangered Lobstermen 🦞

“Challenges I face including impending regulations to the industry are bait and fuel prices along with the cost of gear and trying to find a good sternman that will stay with the boat.”

The Endangered Lobstermen 🦞

“The biggest challenges I face are the constant changes in rules, regulations and prices. The cost of bait, fuel and expenses are exceeding the price of what we are being paid and what we are catching.”

The Endangered Lobstermen 🦞

Part 2

“A life well lived on the water is a life built on hard work, sacrifice and freedom. Lobstering in Maine is one of the hardest most dangerous jobs there is, Long freezing hours, freezing temperature, rough seas, heavy traps and ropes, sore bodies, tired hands and the constant danger and unpredictability of working on the ocean-my father still found pride and purpose in it everyday. The ocean does not hand anything to anyone. One wrong step or a split second can change everything.

Lobstering now carries an even deeper meaning. It represents his legacy. Every buoy in the water, every boat leaving the harbor and every rough sea reminds me of the kind of man he was and the life he lived. To me, it is not just an industry it is love, strength, family and tradition all tied together.”

The Endangered Lobstermen 🦞

Part 1

“Growing up, I helped my father with bait, traps and anything else connected to lobstering. As I got older, I was able to fish alongside him, call him on the VHF to see how things were going or ride over and chat about how our day had been so far. Not only did I get to experience my father’s love and passion for lobster fishing but my children were able to experience it as well.

Lobster fishing meant more to my Dad than hauling traps or making a living. Waking up before sunrise, the smell of the salt air, the sound of the boats in the harbor, early morning on the dock and stories told around the kitchen table-those things became a part of him forever. It was his home.”
