This was a special great gray owl moment for me. I set out alone on January 10 at 2:30 pm, determined to find this owl in an unfamiliar place. The hike was a steep uphill climb, and with daylight fading fast, I was nervous about making it back to my car before dark. The park was empty, and the quiet added to the sense of uncertainty.

But luck was on my side. I managed to find the owl and spent the last hour of light with it. This photo is especially meaningful to me because it’s the very first one I took—capturing that incredible feeling of spotting it for the first time. I honestly didn’t think I’d find it, and I’ll never forget that moment. It was even more special being there alone with it, in the silence of nature ✨

Saw-whet owls are usually hidden in the trees and fast asleep during the day, making it challenging to capture a photo of their beautiful eyes open. This little owl was sound asleep on top of a big vole on a bitterly cold winter day when it suddenly began to wake up, craving an afternoon snack. I’ve heard that owls need to eat more when it’s very cold—maybe that’s why it needed a bite. It was a real treat to witness!

I haven’t posted on Facebook in a while—just catching up! The photos look a bit better here without Instagram’s compression. These are some fun memories with the birds!

Now I’m looking forward to spring days on my kayak with my favorite summer bird the green heron —

During blue hour, just after sunset, I waited for this northern saw-whet owl to wake up. It remained still, eyes closed, until a great horned owl hooted in the distance. Moments later, it flew closer. Though the saw-whet had been fast asleep, it somehow sensed the larger owl’s presence. In an instant, it snapped awake, then vanished into the nightĖ™ā€¢Ėšāˆ˜āœ®šŸŒ™

On a foggy morning, a great gray owl perches silently among the trees. The mist softens the background, giving the forest a dreamy, mysterious feel while making the owl’s silhouette stand out. Fog adds depth to the scene, blending the forest into layers and highlighting the owl’s natural camouflage.

A new bird for me—spotted in the Okanogan! I stepped out of my car into a snowy winter wonderland, and colorful pine grosbeaks lit up the trees. The red ones are male, females have yellow-orange coloring. They were busy picking at seeds, and a big flock was moving through. They are uncommon to rare in Washington State and it is said they arrive on a snowy day ā„ļø
