Saying goodbye, getting in a taxi, and driving away from a human you made from scratch is one of the most poignant experiences.

The whole reason I picked up a camera is because he was born. Capturing all those milestones - first teeth, first steps, first drawings - is what motivated me to keep taking pictures in the beginning. Even though the camera can be a pain to carry around, and even though most moments feel like everyday monotony, looking back on a life of firsts and lasts and in-betweens sure does something good for the heart.

So here’s another first to add to the gallery of his life: Steps towards his future on his own in this big city.

Shot with NikonUSA Z8 and NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8.
Played around with shutter speeds between 1/250 and 1/2.

Lately I’ve been thinking about how creating art happens in peaks and valleys. On the peaks, we share and get praise. In the valleys, we’re taught to get out quickly. Find inspiration. Post. Work. Grind. Take a class. Keep producing. We’re rewarded for making and sharing content at all costs, and I wonder what exactly that cost is.

What if we just want to lie barefoot on the valley floor and let the cool grass ground us? To feel the summer sun on our backs. To enjoy a mountain top at sunset or eat popsicles by the fire pit with laughter and a guitar, a big colorful sky, and the phone powered off in another room. Can we allow ourselves that space?

Flowers wilt. Summers fade. Children grow up and leave.

So I’m not rushing out of the valley this time. I’m lying here letting the stillness speak as long as it likes. And to be honest it feels like rebellion. But maybe transformation does, too.

You raise em on a patch of land where flowers bloom and horses graze on golden pastures under a big Colorado sky, and they’re inevitably gonna fall in love with a city. This summer all her hip hop dreams came true as she got to dance through the streets of New York, living in a dorm, navigating subways and city streets and new friends. What’s better than watching your child work hard and bring their dreams to life? Not even an endless Colorado sunset in the summer is as good as that. 💫
