Maroon Bells. Long exposure on a windy sunrise to smooth out the rippled water. 4 second exposure with a neutral density filter and high f stop. I really like how the shadowy landscape frames The Bells and the wind streaks in the water create subtle leading lines. Definitely a unique shot of an iconic mountain peak. Shot on R5.

To freeze wings in motion on a hummingbird.
A fingertip trembling on the edge of time.
A flicker, a blue too fast for a memory to hold.
Until I steal it.
Then motion becomes miracle.

Osprey: Surfing for Fish. These raptors are master anglers and can pluck fish out of a lake with superb ease. They’re especially active on overcast days which allows them to see subsurface fish easily. On approach they dive talons first into the water at great speed surprising their prey. Getting a good photo of these guys is really about two things: shutter speed and positioning. I captured this shot with my R5 using an RF200-800mm lens in these manual mode settings:
f 6.3
3200/sec shutter
ISO 1200

Dream Lake. If you can get there early enough to catch first light on the mountains, the reward is worth it. Located in Rocky Mountain National Park this small lake provides one of the best alpine reflections at nearly 10,000 feet elevation.

Red-Breasted Nuthatch. This one was hollowing out part of a dead pine tree. While hiking up in the mountains I came across what sounded like a repetitive wood pecking noise and saw this little guy peep out to look at me. Every now and then he would fling out the chipped up wood he was carving out of the inside trunk. Curious one.

Forest Queen. This vixen seemed to almost pose just for me when she perched atop a rock just 20 yards away. She looked off into the distance in this strange, longing way. Being totally unconcerned about me she seemed to just exist in her element, as if I were another tree in her forest.

“Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?” Haha. I came across this “mating ball” of snakes recently and caught some photos of this phenomenon I had never personally witnessed before in nature. In the Spring about 5 or 6 males will intertwine around a female snake to mate in this mass that “moves as one”. Actually kind of freaky to see with your own eyes. I like how the patchy sunlight hits the scales in this underbrush.

Garden of the Gods. A unique perspective of this place that I’m pretty sure you’ve never seen before with this dead tree branch providing the leading lines. Up super early to drive out, hike, and get this sunrise shot.
