Snapseed has changed! Some of the new features are a game changer for this app, which was becoming stale and outdated! Just did a two hour presentation on Snapseed's new AI selections/masking features to BallenIsles photo club that was eye opening for the photographers that attended! I will post some photos that I edited with Snapseed's new masking features that are very similar to some of lightroom mobile's AI masking capabilities! And the app is still free!

Why I Love Live Photo (Especially for Kids) 📸👧

If you’ve ever tried photographing a child, you know the challenge:
they’re always moving—and the best moment often happens just before or after you tap the shutter.

That’s where Live Photo really helps.

Live Photo captures a brief moment before and after the shot, letting you go back later and select the exact frame you want—the smile, the eye contact, the pause in motion.

In this example, I:
âś” Isolated the best frame from a Live Photo
âś” Cropped the image significantly to improve composition
âś” Used AI to isolate the child and rebuild missing areas
âś” Upscaled the final image to maintain quality

This kind of workflow turns a quick snapshot into a finished photograph.

If you’d like to learn how to do this yourself—from choosing the right frame to using modern AI editing tools—I offer one-on-one mentoring tailored to your skill level and the tools you already use.

There's just so much you can do with Gemini's latest Nano Banana update- from editing, to restoring photos, turning you images into paintings, etc., etc. The capabilities are only limited by your own imagination and creativity. Plus, it's just alot of fun. Will photography ever be the same? Probably not!

I've used gemini's nano banana directly from an app on my phone and also within the generative fill tool inside photoshop. Here's an example of a photo I took at a concert and what I was able to do with the app using a simple prompt: Put up a concert sign on the stage and turn this photo into pop art.

Want to take better portraits during the holidays?
Here is a slide from a presentation I gave this week to my camera club on portraits and AI-

6 Simple Steps to a Better Portrait (Phone or Camera):
1. Choose a clean, uncluttered background.
Avoid distractions so the viewer’s eye goes straight to the subject.
2. Position your person or group in good light.
Soft, even light (shade, window light) works best.
3. Choose your lens or zoom level (2X or longer).
Avoid the wide lens for portraits — it can distort faces.
4. Use Portrait Mode (phone) or a wide aperture (camera).
This creates background blur and separates your subject.
5. Move yourself to frame the shot — don’t switch to a wider lens.
Step forward or back to compose. Keep your chosen lens for the best look.
6. Take the shot.

Hold steady, focus on the eyes, and shoot a few variations.

AI in Photography: Past, Present and Future

With the introduction of tools like Google’s Nano Banana, ChatGPT and the incredible capabilities now built into lightroom and photoshop, photographers have more editing power than ever before.

But with all this new tech, one big question keeps coming up:

👉 What can AI actually do for your photography — and what can’t it do?

In my camera club presentation, AI and Photography: Past, Present, and Future, I break down:

âś” What AI Can Do for You
Restore lost detail, fix exposure, remove unwanted objects and people, change a background, change an expression on someone's face, etc., etc. The possibilities are endless.

Interpret scenes and make intelligent editing suggestions

Simplify masking and automate tedious steps

Enhance your workflow without replacing your creative vision

How to incorporate different AI programs into your editing process

✔ What AI Can’t Do
Replace your eye for composition, timing, storytelling

Decide what matters emotionally in an image

Understand your artistic intent

Turn a weak concept into a strong photograph

And just as important…
âś” How to Incorporate AI Into Your Editing Workflow
You’ll learn where AI tools shine, where to use discretion, and how to blend traditional editing with the latest AI-driven capabilities — so you remain the photographer.

Here's a short summary of my next photo club meeting I will be giving a presentation at:

Topic: The Photographer and AI: What it means for your photography.

How AI affects you as a photographer and the questions it raises:

Am I documenting reality—or creating a piece of art?

Why you don't have to choose one identity as a photographer

Our discussion will include:

What is generative AI and what can it do for my photography?

The strengths and weaknesses of using AI as your photo editor

Why photographic principles still matter when using AI

Also to be discussed:

The new iOS 26 operating system- it’s features as it relates to your camera and photos app

An open Q&A on all things photography related

I am available for camera club presentations on many photography topics - including editing with AI- the pros and cons, ins and outs. You can call me at 954-650-6318 or private message me to discuss my availability and fees.

A camera club that I give presentations to recently asked me this question:
I have a member who is interested in learning what accessories, filters, adapters would you recommend for phones?

So, here was my written response:

About Accessories for Mobile Photography
From Bob Shor — mobile & traditional photographer

One of the biggest advantages of shooting with an iPhone today—especially the newer models—is that you don’t need many accessories, filters, or add-ons to create excellent images. The iPhone’s camera system is already doing an enormous amount of high-level work for you.

Why most accessories aren’t necessary (in my opinion)
Modern iPhones include:

Multiple built-in prime lenses (ultrawide/macro, wide, telephoto)

Advanced computational photography (e.g. Smart HDR, Deep Fusion, Night mode)

The option to shoot RAW for maximum editing flexibility

With all of these capabilities, I feel that most clip-on lenses, filters, and adapters aren’t really necessary for the kinds of shooting situations that I typically use an iPhone for (I still shoot with a full-frame mirrorless camera in certain specialized situations).

Years ago, when iPhones had only one or two lenses and computational photography was less advanced, add-on macro or telephoto attachments sometimes helped—but even then, I found the results weren’t always consistent. Today, I feel that the built-in lenses and software algorithms perform extremely well.

About filters
From my perspective, filters aren’t normally needed on an iPhone.
iPhone computational photography already handles:

Exposure balancing

Highlight/shadow recovery

Noise reduction

Color rendering

And the editing tools now available—both in the Photos app and in third-party apps—can recreate many of the effects photographers traditionally use filters for. Even long exposures (or shots where you want to introduce motion blur) can be created using Live Photo conversions or third-party specialty apps.

The one accessory I do recommend
The only accessory I personally use on a regular basis is a selfie-stick tripod combo—not necessarily for selfies, but for:

More stable low-light shots
(even then, Night Mode often does an impressive job handheld)

Long exposures

High/low creative angles

Lightweight, portable support

Specialty photography

When a situation truly requires specialized tools—such as infrared, macro requiring longer focal lengths, or long-range telephoto shots beyond the iPhone’s reach—I switch to my full frame mirrorless camera. But for most shooting situations (street, travel, everyday photography), I feel that the native iPhone tools are more than sufficient.

Of course, other mobile photographers may have different opinions or workflows, and that’s perfectly valid. But based on my photographic experience, the strength of the iPhone is in its simplicity and built-in power—great results with the camera you already carry in your pocket.

About AI and Photography: Are we going too far?
I asked chatGPT to provide some examples of Ansel Adams photos that he manipulated alot in the darkroom- they had many examples, but I thought Adam's quote about his photo Monolith, might be relevant in light of what photographers have been doing lately to modify (i.e. manipulate) their photos using AI (through Gemini and other programs) and how that changes the reality of the picture (he didn't put actual objects in the photo that weren't there)- but it does raise the question to me - what would he do now? Would he embrace AI? Were his photos real?
This was one of the pictures that chatGPT gave as an example of Adam's manipulation in post processing:
Monolith, The Face of Half Dome- You can view his heavily edited picture here:
https://www.anseladams.com/products/mfhd-mr?_pos=1...
Ansel Adams final prints were the result of extensive manipulation using techniques like dodging and burning- the analog equivalent of modern digital editing. Adams said of the final Monolith print, “I had been able to realize a desired image: not the way the subject appeared in reality but how it felt to me and how it must appear in the finished print.

So, here's a little something to get everyone interested in Gemini's capabilities (and AI in general). There are some ethical considerations, but the technology is very cool. Look at the original photo on the left and the photo edited by gemini on the right. I uploaded the photo to gemini and used a simple prompt to get this result. There are endless possibilities with this technology. This goes way beyond basic editing, replacing backgrounds, streamlining and improving your photography workflow, etc. There are literally no boundaries here. Where is photography headed? I have developed a presentation on this for camera clubs: The AI-Assisted Photographer: From Critique to Creation. Message me to find out more. www.bobshorphotography.com
