This little Greek Revival church is now owned by the Old Church Theater. The organization is working hard to rehabilitate the church for continued use as a theater. Built in 1794-94 on Bradford’s Upper Plain as the Town Church, before there was a separation of church and state, the building was moved to the current site of the Congregational Church on North Main St. and there served as the Congregational Church until 1875, when it was moved back on the lot and replaced with a larger church. The Old Church became the Village Hall in 1876 for community gatherings, Minstrel shows and entertainment. In 1921 it was sold and turned into the Colonial movie theater. In 1950 the building was again sold to become an Odd Fellows Hall. The UCC Congregational Church bought back the building in 1970 and rented it for a summer repertory theater, and for many years, the Old Church Theater (OCT). OCT purchased the building last year for the purpose of doing a major rehabilitation to save and use this local landmark. @ Bradford, Vermont

This 1893-94 brick school building is not only a local landmark, but it also has one of the more elegant accessibility retrofits in the state. Here, the architect pulled the steps forward, but still in line with the front entrance and circled a U-shaped gentle-rise ramp to rejoin the entrance walkway at the top of the steps. @ Bradford, Vermont

The Bradford Grace United Methodist Church was built on North Main St. in 1849, but it was enlarged in 1859 and received its vernacular High Victorian Gothic style west front and corner steeples in 1879 apparently in emulation of the Congregational Church located across the street and completed three years earlier. The polychromatic paint scheme pictured in the photograph probably dates from the late 19th century.

In the 1920s and 1930s, petroleum companies built many gas stations across the country that were house-like by design. This relic on Route 12, just north of Northfield, is a survivor from this era. Eric Gilberson believes this may have been a Standard Oil design, but I haven’t been able to confirm. There are a handful of survivors, like this one, across Vermont: Hemmings Station in Bennington, along Route 100 in Stowe, Strongs Ave. in Rutland, Route 2 in Middlesex…. There is a wonderful resource on roadside architecture by Chester H. Liebs, Main Street to Miracle Mile. Chester's book is great fun!
