Thanks to the guy who helped manage it in the surf to get the tag info and hook out quick. Barbless circles help. Never removing it from the wash.
Family night out was productive, still looking for those rare, special catches...
All protected species by-catch quickly unhooked in the wash, and released as quickly as possible.

Stuck the gopro under water in the pond real quick and got a few shots with bad lighting. Meet reba, cheezmo, jack the pumpkinseed, big dipper, little dipper, Orion, Titus, tiny Titus, and rocket with their snail friends: Biggie Slimes, lil' slimes, turbo and jet. Im sure I am missing a few, I cant keep track 😅

It's been a really long time since I caught an American shad. Like 25+ years long time.
My father's friend brought us out to fish for herring and shad. I was somewhere between 10-12 years old. We loaded coolers to use for chunking raritan bay the following night. People around us were live lining herring and catching and releasing the biggest bass I had ever seen at the time. We only had gear for our target species.
We went to the raritan the following night to chunk our fresh catch. We skunked.
Moral of the story? Be prepared for anything, and fish where the bait is, don't bring it to another state/totally different body of water 🤣
