“The sculpture was deinstalled with no prior notice or explanation from the institution, drawing a flurry of questions and objections from local patrons who considered it a landmark overlooking the Potomac River.”

David Rubenstein purchased the sculpture, which was removed from the center last week, from the artist’s foundation. He will display it at the National Gallery of Art.

In his photographs, the skateboarder Jerry Hsu captures Los Angeles’s manic extremes. He maps a city of leftovers and castoffs; portraits of friends and strangers in the street are full of dazed, inscrutable expressions. Many of his images, even the faintly violent ones, possess an absurdist humor. “Maybe this is corny,” Hsu said, “but all this chaos and these little beautiful secrets I found here reminded me of myself.”
