From railway scrap steel and discarded forklift wheels, to a small, very rigid and dampened three axis CNC milling machine. A wee look back at one of many milestones I had to crawl over on the journey to building my own watches.

Needed a reminder that I’m not a piece of s**t and have made progress on this slog.

My dear friend and housemate conjured a cabaret show during the lockdown which kept performers in the spotlight and on the stage. Two years later and is going strong and better than ever! They had me snap a few photos to promote their upcoming show on the 19th of July. This fiesta of fabulousness is happening at the beloved and they’d love to inspire you, give you a giggle and maybe take off a few articles of clothing.

Can you think of a better thing to do on a Wednesday night in New York City? Nope, I didn’t think so.

Tickets available through profile link.

I feel as though I’ve dropped off Facebook for awhile now, so here’s a small update…

At the beginning of covid I taught myself to repair old wristwatches which, as is often the case with me… evolved.

At the end of 2021 I started doodling a design of my own watch thinking I could probably spend a month at a makerspace and make a case, dial, hands and crown and fit it with a nice Swiss automatic movement. A plan which also… evolved.

And that month turned into eighteen months of designing and building two precision three axis CNC milling machines, rebuilding some old watchmaker lathes and other tools a and fitting them all into a Brooklyn Brownstone basement. An ordeal that made me think that perhaps I should make more than one watch…

Which brings us to spring of 2023 and my having just sold all of my first edition of nine wristwatches. Each one designed, machined, polished, wept over, bled on and cursed at right here in Brooklyn New York.

It’s been a journey and one that’s just beginning. I have leaned a whole bunch about manufacturing, CAD design, metallurgy, finishing processes and the embracement of patience.

I’m taking those lessons and starting on the design my second watch edition, and also branching out into other design and fabrication projects. Which should be interesting.

I’ve been sharing the watch story over at my new instagram account: if you’d like to follow along. And a new site linked below with a mailing list signup if you’re in the market for a new watch and you’d like to hear when the next design drops.

Oh and I haven’t hung up my cameras yet, so if your next project needs a good eye I’d love to collaborate.

Hey friends, I’m not one to ask for help but the vet bills from my best buddy took what was already an upside down year and made things a bit worse.

I’ve got a one day steep discount print sale to help cover those bills. All prints in the one day sale will ship on Tuesday, hopefully in time for Christmas.

There’s a link in my profile to the sale. Thank you for the help.

Dear friends, it’s difficult for me to write and share but on the 5th of October Zeiss passed away. Three weeks prior he’d been having a bit of difficultly breathing and was diagnosed with liver cancer which had spread through his abdomen. We the best medical team who helped with his palliative care but there wasn’t anything we could do.

I’m very grateful to the Ernst-Alper family who have really taken us in over the past couple of years and who provided Zeiss with a beautiful setting at a retired dairy farm in Vermont to enjoy his last days. He got to play in a stream, eat all the snacks and roll in a freshly mown and sun kissed hay field.

He left surrounded by family who are going to miss him deeply.

Thank you to everyone who has been a friend, honorary uncle/aunt or simply gave Zeiss love and a scratch over the years.

Zeiss you were you were my home no matter where we were. You shepherded me through so many dark times and taught me how to just exist in the moment. You were the best part of every day and my boy. Thank you for every minute you shared with me. I love you forever and ever.

I was reminded of those years where I lived in a van and crisscrossed North America making portraits. All roads lead you home even if you’re not sure where that is yet.

Have a good weekend folks.

Claudine & Frederick, The Travelers. - March 2022 Brooklyn NY

I carry some images in my head for years, impatiently hoping for the alignment of the stars to bring all the right elements together.
This was one of those, a grain of an idea that I had six years ago which was ruminated upon endlessly and threatened my patience. There were times when I could have cut corners and pushed into life but, as with most of my more whimsical creations, I’m glad I waited.

Thank you to my cast and and my crew for surviving and championing a very rough half hour out in 40mph wind and sideways rain which then outdid itself by turning to sleet.

And a special note of gratitude to my patrons who pre-purchased a print before the shutter pressed. Your support is hugely appreciated.

This limited edition print, is nearly sold out but a few copies are still available on my site. Gilesclement.com/prints
