Joshua Johnston Photography Nature photographer and hiking enthusiast. Ethical photography and LNT principles observed... Being out in nature has always felt like home to me.

I was born in the Pacific Northwest and grew up in the small town of Canby. As a child, I spent my time exploring the rivers and forests near my home, and on clear days I would excitedly point out Mount Hood (I still do this). In my early thirties, I really started exploring and appreciating the vast beauty of the natural world around me. There is no other place I have known where you can take a s

hort drive in any direction and find a landscape that leaves you in wonder. The variety of peaks, rivers, waterfalls, lakes, canyons, and coastline is incredible and awe-inspiring. Initially, I had a point and shoot camera, but the photos didn’t seem to reflect what I was seeing. I wanted to capture that special feeling of standing in the shadow of a massive volcano, or the refreshing spray from a rushing waterfall. In 2012, I purchased my first “real” camera and I was hooked. It's been a long road filled with successes and failures. I have enjoyed the process, and the memories I'm making along the way are priceless. Over the years, I have created this collection of photographs. Each image you see represents a special moment to me, and I hope that you will be inspired by them as well. If you'd like to keep up with my adventures, please feel welcome to contact me here or through email. Thank you for your visit and I hope that you enjoy my work!

A standard Trillium is defined by its strict "rule of three"—three leaves, three sepals, and three petals. Occasionally, nature deviates from the script, resulting in a rare six-petaled variation like this one.

I heard a massive splash behind me at Canby Pond and turned just in time to see this Osprey rising out of the water. Even without a fish in his talons this time, that look of pure determination is incredible. There is nothing like the intensity of these birds when they're on the hunt!

The old-growth forests of the Olympic Peninsula have a way of making everything else disappear. Finding Marymere Falls tucked away in the moss and mist felt like stepping into a different world. 🌲✨
There’s something so grounding about the sound of rushing water and the sight of these fallen giants at the base, slowly being reclaimed by the forest.

I caught this Pacific Wren mid-song, perched on a mossy snag. For such a tiny bird, their voice is incredibly powerful, echoing through the old-growth canopy. It’s those small, vibrant moments that make exploring the Olympic Peninsula so rewarding.

Nature has a beautiful way of highlighting contrast if you look closely enough. This weathered maple leaf, nearly translucent, stood out so clearly against the deep, lush green of the sword ferns.
It’s a quiet reminder of the cycles of the forest—even in decay, there is a delicate kind of art to be found on the forest floor.

Spent some time observing this Roosevelt elk navigating a quiet wetland pond in the Hoh Rain Forest. There is something incredibly peaceful about watching them move through the moss-covered landscape of the Olympic Peninsula.

There’s something mesmerizing about watching a Northern Harrier at work. They don't just fly; they course, staying low and hugging the contours of the tall grass as they hunt. 🌾🦅
Up close, you can really see that distinctive, owl-like facial disk. It’s a reminder that these raptors rely as much on their hearing as their sight to pinpoint prey moving beneath the cover. Seeing one glide by in total silence is an experience that never gets old.

A morning well spent on the Sol Duc River. The 1.6-mile trek through the old-growth forest is the perfect buildup to this view. There's nothing quite like the sound of the falls echoing through the trees to make you forget everything else for a while. 🥾🌲

The emerald greens of the Columbia River Gorge are especially vibrant this time of year. There is nothing quite like the roar of Multnomah Falls and the mist on your face to remind you why the Pacific Northwest is so special. 🌲💧
Captured this view framed by the mossy timber and ferns—a classic Oregon moment.

There is something incredible about seeing a male Wood Duck in the right light. Their scientific name, Aix sponsa, actually translates to "water bird in wedding dress," and it’s easy to see why. Between those iridescent greens and the bold patterns, they really are one of the most ornate birds you’ll find in our local ponds.
Caught this one drifting through some beautiful reflections at the Canby Pond.
