Throughout my life, I’ve always had a need to express my creatively, and have done so through architecture, graphic art, silkscreening, gardening, illustration and photography. In 2015 I completed a series of cat and penguin (cat and bird) illustrations which I combined into a calendar and began focusing on my nature photography – and CatbirdDesign was born. pect for nature since childhood, the more time I spent observing, photographing, and researching her creations, the more aware I became of how amazing yet fragile the habitats that support our fellow creatures really are...

The Northern Red-bellied Cooter is one of the largest freshwater turtles native to Massachusetts, second only to the common snapping turtle. They are sometimes called the redbelly turtle due to their reddish plastron (the underside of their shell). In contrast to adult painted turtles that are 4”-6” in length and usually weigh less than a pound, adult “redbellies” can grow to a shell length of 13.5” and weigh over 12 lbs. Despite their size, these turtles are extremely shy and easily spooked.

The Guardian of the Garden - Alvin, hanging out on top of the cone flower "cage". I've learned, the hard way, that if I don't fence around and over certain native perennials, some of my 4-legged visitors will munch them down to the ground...The enclosures are coated wire fencing with chicken wire over it and are about 30" tall. The tops of the enclosures have a criss-cross of bamboo stakes lashed together leaving approx. 3"-4" square openings. The tall stalks and blooms grow up through the those openings, chipmunks go in and out through the top, but rabbits and groundhogs are too big.

I'm not sure who drinks more sugar water from the feeder in my garden...the hummingbirds or the Downy Woodpeckers. It appears to be about even.
As omnivores, woodpeckers eat insects, spiders, seeds, nuts and acorns, as well as fruit and sap, and so will sip from a hummingbird feeder once they figure out there's a sugar water in there. A taste for sweetness may run in the family...

One of the most loyal patrons of bird feeders, House Finches, are almost strictly vegetarians. Approximately 97% of their diet is made up of vegetable matter including buds, seeds, and fruits. They even feed their nestlings regurgitated seeds. Female House Finches have been observed laying their second clutch of eggs several days before fledging their young from a previous brood. This may be due to the fact that the male has a predominant role in raising/feeding their young.
