Whisper the Eastern Screech owl enjoys a little walk on a beautiful winter day πŸŒΈπŸ¦‰

Whisper is a non-releasable ambassador for his species who lives at the Blue Hills Trailside Museum. He was found by 'good Samaritans', thought to be orphaned. They unfortunately kept Whisper as a pet - this is ILLEGAL, with penalties ranging from a fine of up to $15,000 and/or up to six months in prison. Permits may be granted for native owls and for special purposes only; like falconry, education, or rehabilitation.

An animal like this needs very specific housing, food and care that requires bird of prey knowledge, experience and a VET. Which this family could not provide. Due to keeping the owl so young, instead of bringing him/her to a rehabilitation facility for proper care and release, Whisper never learned the proper skills to survive in the wild.

If you find a wild animal you think is in need, stay a distance away from the animal while keeping watch and call a rehabilitator for help/advice. Do not touch the animal unless you are told to do so or have to transport to professional help. Taking a wild animal of any kind into your home to raise and keep as a pet is illegal, and will cause the animal more harm than people realize. This owl will never be a free, wild bird because someone thought they were helping him/her. If you don't know any rehabilitation facilities or independent wildlife rehabilitators, now is a good time to do some research on who is near you! They're everywhere, no excuses!

This weekend we went to to celebrate 14 amazing years with the best Eastern coyote ambassadors who call the center their home. Denahi, Kenai and Sitka enjoyed many meaty snacks on Sunday while visitors observed them and learned about coyotes. Kenai has always had a special place in my heart, and it has been a gift to watch him thrive for the past 12 years I've known him.

I am so thankful to Will, Pam and all of the staff here who work hard going above and beyond to give these animals everything they need and more, and for giving their time to help with the mission of helping the world have a better understanding about the roles of these magnificent animals in the wild.

is a non-profit, 501c3 organization regulated and inspected by the DEC and USDA. The Center is dedicated to the Spirit of the Wolf, past, present, and future. We provide educational programs about wolves, coyotes, foxes where observation of their natural behavior is possible. The center provides educational programs focusing on current environmental issues such as forest ecology, effects of climate change on habitats and wildlife, and using clean alternative energy sources including solar and wind power.

I have been trying for years to capture Willow's true eye color in the sun, and today was the day! They are actually a rich, golden brown when you look closely. From a distance, they look black! Today was incredibly warm, so I spent the afternoon watching her enjoy some enrichment time outside of her mew.

Willow is a Barred owl, and educational ambassador at Blue Hills Trailside Museum. She is imprinted and non-releasable back into the wild. She lives life with the important purpose of helping us to educate people of all ages about the role of Barred owls and our native wildlife in Massachusetts. You have most likely heard a Barred owl in your lifetime. It sounds a lot like "who cooks for you, who cooks for you all!"

The Blue Hills Trailside Museum is a natural history museum that features indoor and outdoor exhibits of non-releasable native wildlife, providing education about the natural world of Massachusetts. Great Blue Hill reaches a height of 635 feet which scenic views, the highest of the 22 hills in the Blue Hills chain within 125 miles of trails, starting right outside the Museum doors. Missing my bird friends at Blue Hills Trailside Museum today while I'm home for recovery. Even one week away from them is too long! Here are photos I took with Scarlett after animal care last week πŸ₯Ήβ™₯️ she is my favorite girl! I don't know that the love is reciprocated, but she ks certainly nicer to me these days compared to how she was when I was a new person in her life. So grateful for all the incredible animal encounters that come with being an animal care volunteer at Trailside!

Scarlett's "injury" is that she is imprinted on people and was not a good candidate for release as a young hawk. This is the most common "injury" for our program birds. Scarlett and Amelia our broad winged hawk seem to enjoy it!
