Little Mama Possum (Opossum) Grooms A Joey In Pouch | WhatsThatShadow.com

We have two mama opossums with babies in pouch coming to our yard at night.

The previous video was of Big Mama. She has all black ears and is much bigger. Here's that video - you can see big mama's babies better. https://youtu.be/iGnUFchf1w4

This video is of Little Mama. She is much younger with white tips still on the ears and is also much smaller.

This raccoon comes up from the marsh and looks normal. Then we see a HUGE mussel (shell fish) attached to his/her foot. The raccoon will likely lose a toe or two but should ultimately be ok.

There are a lot of raccoons in the yard missing multiple toes and now we know one of the reasons why.

On a side note, we volunteer rescuing raptors and shorebirds with a local avian clinic. I have also witnessed shellfish so big that they can weigh down small herons and egrets. Charleston SC Apr 2026. https://whatsthatshadow.com/raccoon-with-huge-mussel-on-foot/

So excited to finally see a mama opossum with babies (called joeys) visible in her pouch!

She stops by one waterbowl for a long drink and grooms her pouch and a couple babies and then moves over to a different waterbowl where she has a nondescript interaction with a raccoon.

Raccoons and possums generally get along great. There were three possums in the yard last night and two of them had a pouchful of babes.

This marsh raccoon is on a bender and late in heading home. Seeing raccoons in the day does not mean they are sick.

Spring is a time of mating and territorial disputes and summer is a time of feeding kits. Seeing a raccoon in the day usually means it's hungry or taking advantage of an environmental situation.

Marsh raccoons prefer hunting at low tide and the tides change every day here. The tide was more opportunistic for it as the light comes out so it takes advantage of that.

Lastly, as daylight increases it reduces the available of dark night hours that they have in the fall and winter to forage and hunt.

The loveable turkey vulture strikes again... their noses and beaks are my fav, along with that huge wingspan.

Raccoons and other animals are still thirsty when it's cold. If you can't keep ice out of your waterbowl at night, maybe put out fresh water in a different bowl in the morning that's not frozen. Charleston SC 1/21/25

Possums are the cutest. Did you know that possums have immunity to venomous snake bites and that they also love to eat ticks?
