Fall Petite or Full Family Session: which one is right for you?

There really isn’t a “better” option. It depends on what your family needs this year.

🍂 A Fall Petite Session might be perfect if you want a quick update, a handful of beautiful photographs, and something easy to fit into a busy fall weekend.

🌿 A Full Family Session gives us more time to settle in, explore, play, and photograph all those little interactions that unfold when nobody is watching the clock.

Petites are 10 minutes and include 5 edited digital images for $225.

Full sessions are longer, more story-driven, and include your complete gallery.

Both are relaxed. Both leave room for movement and real personalities. And neither requires perfectly behaved children. 😉

One of the things I hear most from parents before a family session is some version of:

“But what if my kids don’t cooperate?”

Here’s the good news: they don’t really need to. ❤️

Your kids can move. They can be silly. They can need a minute to warm up. They can snuggle into you, wander off to investigate something interesting, or decide that running is much more fun than standing still.

That’s all okay.

My fall family sessions in Charlottesville aren’t about getting everyone to behave perfectly for the camera. They’re about creating space for your family to actually be together, with a little guidance from me when you need it.

Because some of my favorite photographs happen after we stop worrying about getting the “perfect” one.

You don't need perfectly behaved kids for family photos.

They can run. They can wiggle. They can be shy or need to stay close to you. They can need a minute. They can make ridiculous faces, wander off to investigate something interesting, or decide that sitting nicely and smiling is absolutely not happening today.

That's okay.

Some of my favorite photographs happen in those in-between moments, when everyone stops worrying about the camera and just gets to be together.

Fall Petite Sessions are short on purpose: 10 relaxed minutes to play, snuggle, move around, and capture your family as they are right now.

There’s a strange thing that happens when you’re raising kids.
The ordinary things don’t feel important while they’re happening.
The way your child fits against your chest.
The gap where their front tooth used to be.
The curls at the back of their neck.
The way siblings annoy each other relentlessly and then, five minutes later, sit pressed against each other like there isn’t an entire couch available.
It just feels like Tuesday.
Until one day you find an old photograph and realize:
Oh.
I remember that version of us.
That is why I photograph families.
Not because every year requires a perfectly posed photograph for the holiday card.
Because your family will never be exactly this family again.

“Is ten minutes really enough?”.'".
For the right family, absolutely.
A Fall Petite Session isn’t a tiny version of a full family session.
It’s something different.
We’re not trying to photograph every possibrle combination or tell your entire family story in ten minutes.
Instead, we move quickly, keep things playful, and concentrate on creating a small collection of photographs that feel like you.
And there’s another advantage:
Your kids barely have time to realize they’re having their picture taken. 😂
Petite Sessions can be especially wonderful if:
Your kids have short attention spans.
Your partner is not exactly counting down the days until family-photo season.
You want updated photographs for your walls or holiday cards.
A full session isn’t what you need right now.
Or you simply want a few beautiful photographs of this particular season of your family.

You don’t need to have it all together before you schedule family photos.
You don’t need perfectly coordinated outfits.
Your kids don’t need to promise they’ll behave.
You don’t need to lose ten pounds.
Nobody needs to practice smiling.
And you definitely don’t need to spend the entire session worrying about whether everyone is doing what they’re “supposed” to be doing.
Come as you are.
I’ll give you some direction when you need it. I’ll step back when you don’t.
Your kids can move.
You can laugh.
Someone can need a snack.
Your toddler can decide they are absolutely NOT interested in my plans.
We’ll work with it.
Because the goal isn’t a photograph of your family being perfect.
It’s photographs that feel like your family.

One of the things parents tell me before family photos is some version of:
“I just hope my kids cooperate.”
Here’s the good news.
I am not expecting them to.
They can wiggle.
They can be shy.
They can need a minute.
They can make weird faces, run away from me, refuse to stand where we planned, decide they desperately need to investigate a stick, or suddenly become VERY interested in something happening 40 feet away.
None of that ruins your family photos.
Because I’m not waiting for your children to perform so I can photograph them.
I’m photographing your family interacting with each other.
I’ll give you direction when you need it. I’ll change course when something isn’t working. And sometimes the thing your child decides to do instead becomes the photograph you love most.
Fall family sessions and Fall Petite Sessions are coming in Charlottesville this October.

You do not need an hour-long photo session to make photographs that matter.
Sometimes ten minutes is exactly enough.
Enough time for a snuggle.
A ridiculous laugh.
A kid to run straight into you.
A hand to reach for yours.
And yes, we’ll get the photograph where everyone is together, too.
My Fall Petite Sessions are designed for families who want beautiful, honest photographs without turning family photos into an entire production.
They’re short. They’re relaxed. Your kids are allowed to move and be themselves. And you do not need to arrive with perfectly coordinated outfits or children who have promised to “behave.”

Fall always makes me notice how quickly kids change. I
Maybe it’s because we have the photographs from last fall sitting right there to prove it.
The kid who needed to be carried is suddenly running ahead.
The little hand that automatically reached for yours doesn’t quite as often.
The toddler belly disappears. The baby teeth fall out. Their legs get longer. Their personalities get bigger.
And somehow, while you were busy packing lunches and finding missing shoes and getting everyone where they needed to go, another year happened.
That’s what I want your family photographs to hold onto.
Not just what everyone looked like.
What it felt like to be your family right now.
