Seeing double… after our primary was damaged in the line of duty, Cooks Drone Works got us up and running on short notice. I enjoyed great service through Robbie and he was nice enough to help me get back flying on a holiday weekend! We went from grounded to flying within 24 hrs of contacting him! Couple nights ago we dispatched to a call in Cheraw from Andrew to look for a deer hit quartering too with a 6.5 prc. He was confident of the hit but it had been nearly dark and when he fired many deer had blew and ran, so he was unsure of its path. We hoped to find the deer in short order in the bean field he was hunting. Unfortunately that was not how it went. I begin be rapidly eliminating the beans and began to work the potential routes a hit deer may run. We had no luck for about a hr when the hunter mentioned he had patterned it a bit with a trail camera and suspected its primary bedding ground was behind the deerstand a couple hundred yards. Sure enough we found it where I didn’t think it should be. Right behind the stand, it had bedded short of where it usually did in thick cover. It had looped through the beans on an unexpected line considering the terrain and cover available to it that was far closer. It ended up in thick woods and we began to maneuver to try and observe it through the thick branches to make a decision on our next move. We could see the bullet hole but no exit due to head on hit. The buck appeared quite alert but we were confident in a hard hit just due to the angle. We began discussing a tracking dog team to potentially bay it. I contacted South Carolina Tracking Network and had a guy on standby. As I had the drone down to change the battery we began to replay footage and deliberate the shot lethality and whether we wanted to run the dogs. Unfortunately in the excitement the drone got stepped on in the dark… I was devastated.. but the decision was made for us. Dog or nothing. We contacted Lance with White Trail Recovery. Lance showed up in about a hr. We began at the estimated hit sight. Lance wanted his dogs to have the natural flow of the usual track. The dogs had trouble finding the trail early so we made some quick adjustments to compensate for the deers unexpected route and the hit sight not being certain due too it being in a bean field as well as nearly dark at time of shot. Suddenly the dogs hit the trail. Within moments the deer bayed and its suffering ended. As we inspected the hit, it seems the bullet deflected down breaking the shoulder then travelled low along the body. The dogs ended up being critical in ending the suffering as rapidly as possible. Air Support will always work with others when necessary to ensure the best outcome, for both the hunter and the game, wether to confirm a miss or rapidly end suffering. We enjoy positive relationships with several dog teams as well as other drone pilots. Special thanks to the South Carolina Tracking Network and especially White Trail Recovery !

Im grounded and it kills me, I want to take these calls, but drone was damaged last night, I can still recommend other trackers tho!

Well this is awkward….. usually I pop a snazzy video on this page after a successful track, but…. I used a janky thumb drive to transfer my footage to my iPad and happily formatted my controller gallery because i had a bunch of old vids on there. Only to discover the janky thumb drive was, well, janky. So you guys gunnu need to use your imagination. Got a call to a club land down in a Wallace and we showed up on a hot and muggy night, last night that is. I alerted Kyle Mccutchen, a dog tracker I enjoy working with, that we may need back up, due to the thermal looking pretty rough in the high heat. We searched in the region of last blood, about 200yd from shot, for about 40 min and near some water and scrub we thought would be a likely bed area, with no sign of the buck we tried one last thing before bringing Kyle up from a hr away, we sent out a party to reevaluate the blood under the drones spotlight and try and determine a line of travel to narrow the search. As I positioned the drone the thermal panned over a field I had not looked at and I see the glorious red blob a pilot just knows so deep down is 110% the target buck. And it was! Barely 50 yds off of my search pattern. On a cold night I would have seen it in 3 minutes of taking off, but not last night! Anyway good start to r***e season! First viable call and first recovery of the season!
