Happy one year anniversary, Hannah + Nate! 🤍

I can’t believe it’s already been a year since this beautiful day. Sharing a few of my favorite photographs from a wedding that will always hold such a special place in my heart.

Sometimes the weather you were worried about ends up giving you photographs you never could have planned. 💛 It is just part of the story. It doesn’t have to define the photographs.

I LOVE wedding detail photos. There’s something so beautiful about taking all of those carefully chosen pieces and turning them into a part of your wedding story.

But images like these take time. Styling your invitation suite, jewelry, rings, shoes, florals and all of those little details means I’m stepping away from the room and what’s happening around you to create them.

And that’s why one of the most important conversations I have with my couples is simply: What matters to you?

If beautiful, styled details are important to you, we’ll intentionally make room for them in the timeline. If you’d rather I spend that time documenting you getting ready, laughing with your people and capturing more of what’s naturally unfolding, tell me that too.

There isn’t a right answer. Your wedding photography shouldn’t be based on what I love to photograph. It should reflect what you want to remember.

Talk to your photographer. Tell them what matters to you. Those conversations are how we create a wedding gallery that actually feels like yours. đź’›

A little ask from me today. đź’›

After 12+ years of photographing weddings and building this little business of mine, one of the hardest things about losing my Google profile for a bit was watching years and years of reviews disappear with it.

So, I’m rebuilding. Slowly but surely.

If we’ve worked together over the years, whether I photographed your wedding, we worked alongside each other in the industry, you’ve referred someone my way, I would be incredibly grateful if you took a minute to leave a few words about your experience with me.

Those reviews may seem like such a small thing, but for a small business like mine, they matter SO much. They help new couples find me, trust me, and ultimately allow me to keep doing what I’ve loved doing for all these years.

Thank you for being here, for recommending me, for sharing my work, and for continuing to support Winterlyn Photography. I never take any of it for granted. 🤍

I swear the second September hits, I’m ready for autumn. 🍂 The colors are already starting to peek through, and it has me so excited for all the beautiful fall weddings I’m about to photograph. Golden light, crisp air, changing leaves… my favorite wedding season is almost here. 🤎

No matter how many times I photograph a wedding at the Art Institute of Chicago South Garden, it never feels the same.

Every couple brings their own style and energy to this beautiful space. It has become such an iconic location for Chicago wedding photos, but somehow, it never loses its charm for me.

I’m sharing more of my favorite Art Institute wedding portraits and why this garden continues to be one of my absolute favorite places to photograph in Chicago. Visit the link to see the full post.

Hot take 🔥 but a wedding timeline should serve the couple, and not the other way around.

Far too often in this industry a couple gets handed a timeline based on what they’re “supposed” to do instead of being asked how they actually want to experience their wedding day.

Your planner and photographer shouldn’t be telling you what your wedding day needs to look like. They should be asking, How do YOU want to spend your wedding day? Then we, as your vendor team help you figure out how to make that happen. We know how long things realistically take. We know where buffer time is needed. We know the logistics that you may not be thinking about.

But guidance and control are two very different things. If dancing with your friends and family is one of the things you’re most excited about, your timeline should protect that time. If you don’t care about cutting a cake, skip it. If you don’t want four or five speeches, don’t have them. If certain traditions mean nothing to you, they do not need to take up precious time simply because “that’s how weddings are done.”

And this is where I think couples need to be included in the conversation more.

Before building a timeline, I want to know: What matters to you? What are you most excited about? Where do you actually want to spend your time?

Because I’ve photographed enough weddings to know how quickly a reception can disappear. Dinner runs long. Speeches turn into 30 minutes. Traditions get stacked one after another. Suddenly the dance floor finally opens and there’s barely any night left to enjoy it.

Build a day around what matters to you. Want all the details, first looks and portraits? AMAZING. But if you don’t, that’s OK too. Decide what matters to you first. Let your vendors help make it realistic. And protect the parts of your wedding you know you’ll actually want more of when the night is over. 💛
