I love sharing the beauty of this world that hopefully inspires you to take a trip of your own into the outdoors that surround us. I believe nature’s ability to leave us struck with awe and wonder is one of the best things about life and everyone should experience it as often as you can. So go ahead, take a gander, and find your next journey in life.

“Solitude”

This was an unforgettable moment of solitude. It wasn’t silent but the absent of no noise pollution from humans was striking. No motors, music nor machines. No human voices, no commotion. A complete transformation from the months prior and a return to what it was years ago.

To be alone in this section of the alpine was truly a privilege to experience since often one can only find this feeling deep in the backcountry or more remote wilderness in this region of Montana.

These moments are rare and fleeting but perhaps that is their power.

“Tough”

I read a neat article by about toughness that resonated with me:

“In our culture toughness is often misunderstood. We glamorize gritted teeth, chest beating and pushing blindly through pain. That’s not toughness; it’s cosplay.

Real toughness is quiet. It’s the ability to stay composed, regulate emotion and make the right decision under pressure.

The concept of toughness has been stretched thin with over 30 traits attached to it but at its core toughness is decision making under stress:

Do you crumble or find clarity? Do you react impulsively or respond deliberately?

True toughness isn’t about acting hard. It’s about acting wisely when things get hard. It’s emotional control, vulnerability and skill.

Toughness is the ability to make the right choice when fatigue, fear and stress are screaming at you: confidence, motivation, discipline and resilience.”

I’ve been fortunate enough to share these mountains with some truly tough partners but the long hours exploring this area stand out as being some of the hardest hours I’ve spent in GNP. I was lucky enough to have .and.the.wild lead each trip personifying this definition of toughness. It’s humbling and inspiring to join these tough dudes who push through the noise to enjoy the silence that can be found.

“The Mystery”

There are things in life we plan, pursue, achieve and then there are things that happen, align and occur. I love those moments…well most of them. They’re not always pleasant (kinda like this rain shower) but some times they create beautiful things beyond our imagination.

“Fortitude”

This trip required a healthy dose of it. The peaks we climbed for this view were the shortest distance of any objective I’ve picked in the last 3 years yet took a lot more time and effort than we ever imagined. Despite countless trips in the wilderness of this park the particulars of this approach impeded any quick or easy progress and I’ll remember it as a classic grind all the way.

It had me thinking about how critical the mind is to train and push the body. The body is incredibly adaptive especially to tasks and environments that are unusual but it’s the mind that has to force that change. Without a strong mind the body will be weak but a strong mind can make the body do most things.

This looks different for everyone, but for me taking in a view seldom seen on a brisk summer morning reminds me where a strong mind can take me.

“Many Drama”

It’s pretty incredible to recognize the amount of good weather I’ve had in the mountains. Especially when weather windows have to be coordinated with personal schedules, seasonal hazards and work hours in order to achieve the objective(s) and have an opportunity to catch great light. I can’t say what that probability is but I would say it is very small.

This trip was one where the weather didn’t line up with several forecasts and we were forced to pivot objectives based on what the weather was giving us which was classic June weather (rain, snow, grobble, sun, repeat). We didn’t get to our objectives for this trip but ended up with some cool photos and memories in the mountains. It’s rarely a bad time out there and most of the time it’s pretty dang stellar.

“Full Circle”

It takes countless minutes to get that moment that ends in minutes. In fact so much of life is spent in the pursuit of vs the arrival at. The arrival is so fleeting but I’d like to think our arrival is actually the beginning of someone else journey vs just being the end of ours.

You see I believe we follow those who came before us after becoming inspired by their destination. Then our arrival at a similar destination has the potential to inspire those watching us. In this way the short lived destination becomes the long term inspiration and encouragement for others as it was for us.

This image has been in my mind for years since seeing a similar view (albeit from a plane vs from a mountain top) and now it is a memory for me but hopefully an inspiration for someone else.
