Chicago is often spoken about through noise.

This story is about stillness.

The Solace of the Black Samurai is a new fashion editorial from The Chicago Edit, photographed at the Japanese Gardens in Chicago.

Inspired by Afro Samurai, cherry blossoms, and the overlooked peace of the city, the piece explores fashion as armor, ritual, identity, and self-expression.

Black art has documented our history.

But what happens when that becomes the dominant narrative?

As a Black artist, I’ve spent years moving through galleries, studying how we choose to see ourselves—and I started to notice a pattern.

So much of what we create is rooted in struggle. And for good reason.

But I found myself asking:

What does that shape?
What does it reinforce?
And what might it be limiting us from imagining?

This isn’t about rejecting that work.

It’s about expanding beyond it.

I wrote a new piece exploring this tension—Beyond the Wound—now live on The Chicago Edit.

I’d really love to hear your thoughts on this.

Does this resonate with you, or challenge how you see Black art today?

Chicago has always had its own language of style.

Not borrowed. Not waiting to be validated elsewhere.

Built here through culture, through craft, through the people shaping it in real time.

Chicago has influenced fashion culture for decades.

From Marshall Field’s to RSVP Gallery.
From Virgil Abloh to the arrival of Rick Owens and Kith.

For years the industry overlooked the city.

But something may be changing.

In today’s creator economy, authority is often declared before it’s earned.

Workshops are taught by artists still building their portfolios. Panels feature “industry leaders” only a few years into their careers. Titles inflate. Applause circulates. And somewhere in the process, the meaning of mastery begins to shift.

Is Chicago rewarding confidence over craft?
Are we building excellence — or performing it?

In my latest essay for The Chicago Edit, I explore apprenticeship, self-appointment, and how social media has reshaped creative standards in Chicago and beyond.

This isn’t a takedown. It’s a reflection.

Because cities that confuse applause for excellence rarely lead — they echo.

Chicago fashion designers are everywhere right now — runway shows, pop-ups, creative showcases.

But where is the infrastructure?

Our latest essay breaks down the difference between a fashion scene and a fashion industry — and why sustainable fashion brands require more than applause.

If you’re interested in Chicago fashion, fashion business, or emerging fashion cities, this conversation matters.

Chicago doesn’t suffer from a lack of skill—it suffers from dispersion. When everything is shown, nothing is sharpened. Taste isn’t elitist. It’s editorial. It’s the discipline to choose, to withhold, to refine.

This essay explores why talent alone isn’t enough—and why discernment is the missing multiplier.

Fashion no longer belongs to a handful of capitals. Power has decentralized—quietly, steadily—and cities still waiting for permission are already behind. Chicago doesn’t lack talent. It lacks systems built for how fashion actually moves today. In an era where culture circulates digitally and relevance is built directly, the future won’t belong to the loudest city—but to the ones that understood the shift early and built anyway.
