A few days ago, I was asked if I’d be interested in photographing a maternity session.
My answer? “I’ve never photographed one before… but why not?”
I had just a few days to prepare, so I spent hours researching, building a shot list, choosing the location, planning poses, deciding on focal lengths, and thinking through how I wanted to tell the story.
Then the unexpected happened.
A major accident on the bridge into Coronado delayed my client by 45 minutes. My wife and I stood on the beach watching the sun sink lower and lower, along with the golden light I had planned the entire session around.
When my client finally arrived, we had about 20 minutes before it was dark—and barely 10 minutes of usable sunlight left.
To make things even more meaningful, she was scheduled for a C-section the very next day.
So I threw my plan out the window.
Instead of chasing the shots I had imagined, I focused on capturing the moments in front of me. She was incredible—walking through soft sand, climbing dunes, kneeling on the beach, and somehow keeping an eye on her 3-year-old the entire time with nothing but grace and a smile.
Sometimes the best photographs don’t come from perfect conditions. They come from adapting, trusting your instincts, and telling an honest story.
For my very first maternity session… I think it turned out okay.
What do you think?
