In this image UP stands for Unlimited Power instead of Union Pacific.

Big Boy No. 4014 was accompanied by five specially painted diesel locomotives at Horseshoe Curve from both Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern. No, they were not pushing the steam locomotive, they were essentially rolling billboards.

Consist included -

Union Pacific No. 4014
UP No. 1616, Abraham Lincoln
NS No. 2026, Lady Liberty
NS No. 250, The Freedom
NS No. 1776, The Bell
UP No. 1776, it’s yellow with a flag painted on it.

Of the many trains seen during the wait for Union Pacific Railroad Big Boy No. 4014 to arrive the best was probably the New York Central Heritage Unit, Norfolk Southern SD70ACe No. 1066.

Amusing for sure as Horseshoe Curve is very much the domain of the NYC’s arch nemesis the Pennsylvania Railroad but on one had the NYC’s preferred steam locomotive builder was the American Locomotive Company which of course built the Big Boy.

Anyways here comes Penn Central 2.0.

A break from Big Boy to pay respects to the eldest surviving Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 Berkshire the No. 755. ToledoRails and I arrived well before Union Pacific No. 4014’s scheduled departure time so it was only natural to head up one more street to see the fine graduate of Lima Locomotive Works.

Good thing we went there as we had to inform more than a couple of bystanders that No. 755 was not in fact the train they were searching for.

Locomotives like No. 755 regularly ran at speeds up to 80 MPH on loaded freight and passenger trains on the route that Big Boy would take. Big Boy would be limited by Norfolk Southern’s steam speed limit of no more than 40 MPH. After it was built and running the first Big Boy, No. 4000, was tested at 80 MPH resulting in the decision that they should probably not ever go that fast again.
