Despite a somewhat less active storm season than usual, the RISE-26 mission has carried out several successful storm chases. The atmospheric research mission that remains on-going is mostly crowd-funded by our audience.

The bright reds and purples are a ton of storm energy that’s building up. That’s starting to move north into southern Nebraska this afternoon. If a storm can form in southeast Nebraska, watch out: could be big hail and flooding rains. *Just because there is atmospheric instability, like this, doesn’t mean storms are guaranteed. We still need a mechanism to incite lift. The air at the surface needs to rise and become buoyant. Very hot surface temperatures could get this done, but not quite warm enough yet.

We’ve done a partial restock to keep things going for another week or two

I noticed last night that there may be a flash flooding risk in southeastern Nebraska or southwestern Iowa today. I waited to mention it, hoping that our model data would help make this easier by morning. It hasn’t.

The WPC put out a slight risk of excessive rainfall. That’s the yellow area on the map. The QPF map, which, which shows precipitation amount, is also showing higher values in that area.

Whether there’s actually severe storms with hail and wind today or not, this flooding risk should persist regardless. If storms form, as expected, and congeal into a big group between 8 and 11pm, they won’t move much, so all of their rain will fall in mostly one area. That’s where the problem lies.

Tomorrow, there's going to be a very unstable atmosphere between I-80 and I-70. The SPC has this area in a level 2 of 5 severe weather risk. It's common to see these high storm energy values this time of year, so this doesn't mean storms are guaranteed. We will need a trigger mechanism, which may or may not happen. If a storm or group of storms can form in this environment in the afternoon and evening, expect them to quickly become severe, with large hail, strong winds, and a low tornado risk.

Friday could be eventful in Nebraska through Iowa. Large Hail, Damaging Winds, and a couple of Tornadoes are all possible.

Planning to be somewhere in the green.

We'll see how this develops as we approach tomorrow afternoon.

Another abandoned building in the middle of nowhere. I stopped to take this quick photo near Ideal, South Dakota yesterday. Only had a few seconds before the heavy rain moved in.
