THE ARTIST'S JOURNEY

Some people spend years mastering an instrument, perfecting a dance form, creating, performing, writing, or building a craft that becomes part of who they are.

This summer, I'm looking for musicians, dancers, performers, visual artists, writers, and makers who want to explore their story through fine art portraiture.

Not a headshot, not a branding session, and not a portrait of what you do.

A portrait of who you have become through the pursuit of your craft.

This is part of a fine art portrait research project exploring storytelling, meaning, and artistic interpretation. There is no session fee and no obligation to buy the finished piece.

Selected participants will collaborate on a fully artist directed concept resulting in a finished fine art artwork.

Applications now open: https://jessicavallia1.sproutstudio.com/questionnaire/artist-application

I'm doing something completely different this summer.

For years, my work has lived at the intersection of portraiture, storytelling, and fine art. This summer, I'm stepping away from the traditional portrait session business model temporarily and conducting a creative project exploring what happens when art is created simply to create.

This is NOT a model call...
This is NOT a mini session...
This is NOT a discounted portrait experience... tho there is NO fee to participate if chosen.

Selected applicants will collaborate with me on a fully artist directed fine art concept built around one of three themes:

• Legacy & Heritage
• The Artist's Journey
• Stories of Strength

Each project will result in a finished fine art portrait created as a collectible artwork rather than a traditional portrait order.

Friendly reminder:
• You do not need to know how to pose.
• Your husband does not need to enjoy taking pictures.
• Your kids do not need to behave perfectly.
• And you absolutely do not need to stress-shop matching white shirts from Target at midnight.

I help you through all of that...

My job is creating portraits that feel emotional, connected, and beautiful without making your family feel stiff or awkward in the process.

Which is especially important because children, ok let's be real it's husbands... can smell fear.

There's nothing to fear about family portraits with me, it's not as glamourous as I maybe make it look on my website and FB feed. I try to keep it fun and light while I work magic and you feel beautiful.

I'm booking summer and fall right now, so let's jump on a call after filling out the form to get a date set: www.jessicavallia.com/inquire

People sometimes think they need to plan some giant elaborate portrait session to make it worthwhile.

Honestly? Sometimes one image is enough.

One portrait that captures your family exactly as they are right now.
One image that FEELS like your child.
One piece of artwork that lives in your home long after this phase is gone.

That’s the goal for me every single session... everything else is extra. Extra for the grandparents, extra for the graduation slideshow someday, but extra.

I never aim for hundreds of photos that will live on a hard drive, I work for THE ONE during every single session and then we just play and have a good time. And that's where the memories are made...

Let's book a session this summer and get THE ONE for your family, it'll be everything a few years from now: www.jessicavallia.com/inquire

I love portraits that feel a little more like memories and a little less like “everybody stand here and smile at the camera while dad slowly loses the will to live.”

The in between when families play on their own bonds, their own humor, and their own special stories... Those are usually the images families end up loving the most years later.

That’s the direction my work has been evolving in for years now... something a bit more emotional, cinematic, connected, and still beautifully timeless.

Every family has a unique bond and every season of your family has a story to tell. Let's do that together this summer. I still have a few spots open for Colorado Springs sessions: www.jessicavallia.com

As a mom of four, I think photographs have become more emotional to me as my kids have gotten older...

When they’re little, you think you’ll always remember everything. And then suddenly one graduates summa cm laude, one starts driving, one gets taller than you, and one still somehow leaves wet towels on the floor like it’s a personality trait.

The years move fast., faster than anybody warns you about when they hand you your perfect little human after they're born...

That’s probably why I photograph families the way I do now. Less about perfection. More about holding onto the feeling of this stage before it changes again. The connections in the family that are real and beautiful.

I woke up today missing my "messy hair, don't care" tiny muffin... she's going to be 11 this year and I love everything about who she's become but those moments fade fast and it made me think of all the times we didn't do a session and I just can't get that back.

Here's to more family portraits, even for us and for you I'm booking summer through fall right now at www.jessicavallia.com/inquire

I genuinely think the age people miss most is usually the one they thought would last longer.

The missing teeth, the chubby little hands, the way they still crawl into your lap without asking, the weird little mispronunciations... 🥲 The stage where they think you are the coolest human alive.

Nobody tells you those things disappear a little bit at a time until they are all teenagery or just plain grown up... I'm currently in the stage of having adult and teens and had no idea how fast this would go 😭

That’s why I believe portraits matter so much. Not because life is perfect, but because it isn’t permanent.

Summer family portrait sessions are currently open in Colorado Springs before they up and change on you again... without your permission haha!

For dates fill out the form and we'll get started www.jessicavallia.com/inquire

One of my favorite things is seeing kids walk past their portraits every single day without realizing how deeply it shapes their lives...

They grow up seeing:
“We are loved here.”
“We belong here.”
“This family matters.”

That’s very different than photos disappearing into a phone camera roll with 47 screenshots, two blurry Costco pictures, and somebody’s recipe for crockpot tacos...

Portraits deserve to live where your life actually happens, where the love actually thrives.

I’m currently booking summer family portrait sessions in Colorado Springs but the summer goes fast, and so do these sessions.

Almost every family I photograph says some version of:
“We’ve been meaning to do this for years.”

And honestly? I get it... we do the same thing. In fact I hate having my portraits made, I'm that person 🤣

Life is busy.
Kids are chaotic.
Schedules are ridiculous.
Everyone is tired.
And family portraits somehow end up living in the same category as “organize the garage” or “finally paint the bathroom.”

But then the kids grow up either way...

That’s the weird thing about parenthood. It keeps moving whether we feel ready or not.

You do not need a perfect house, perfect body, or perfectly behaved children to create something timeless to hang on your wall... You just need this time of your life to matter enough not to lose it completely.

Let's get that done for you before they get any bigger, visit my website today to get started: https://jessicavallia.com/inquire

There’s something really emotional about photographing young musicians...

Parents spend years watching them practice, struggle, perform, grow confidence, become disciplined humans… and then suddenly they’re almost adults.

The instrument that once looked bigger than they were somehow becomes part of who they are.

This year I’m opening a small number of Aspiring Masters portrait sessions for dedicated young musicians and rising seniors for the class of 2027. Emotional, cinematic portraits that feel like this chapter of life actually mattered, because it does. RIGHT NOW, it's fully part of who they are and it should be remembered.

Also just so you know... cello cases weigh approximately the same as a Honda Civic... I’m convinced of it.
