SUNDAY FREE-FOR-ALL

Every chance I get to experiment with photography I take it. When I'm learning new techniques it's common for themes to over lap. Here's my love for music - the subject of a new photography technique.

REEL-Y GOOD SATURDAY

The Aspen Acres Wildfire is still a part of the landscape and I've continued documenting it through both photography and black-and-white infrared video. All shot at 830nm.

Some of this footage was captured with a very long lens, so there's a little shake in the camera - but sometimes imperfections are part of the story.

61 days later the fire still continues.

NEW PHOTO BLOG POST

There's always been something about the road that calls to me. The miles, the changing light, the places in between and the quiet moments when headlights and taillights become streaks of color against the darkness.

The new blog post is a small tribute to the road and the countless miles traveled.

FORGOTTEN FRAME FRIDAY

There are chapters of our lives that feel like another lifetime.

For me, one of those chapters began in the early 2000s, when I discovered fire performance and the strange, beautiful art of manipulating flame. Nights blurred together in smoke and darkness, surrounded by people who seemed just as comfortable dancing with danger as they were with each other.

These photographs are fragments of that time.

Faces illuminated for only a moment by fire. Friends who came and went. Performances that existed for a few minutes and then disappeared into the darkness. Some of these people I haven't seen in years. Others left a much deeper mark on my life than they probably realize.

This isn't everyone. Not even close. There are far too many memories, faces and stories to fit into a single gallery.

But that's what Forgotten Frame Friday is about—digging through the past and finding pieces of ourselves that we thought we'd left behind.

For a moment, the flames are burning again.

And there are still plenty of photos in the archives.

More to come. 🔥

THROUGH THE LENS THURSDAY

Sometimes the photograph is only the final step in a much bigger process.

These are a few of the camera setups I’ve used while creating my black-and-white infrared series. Infrared photography has its own set of challenges and every one of these images requires a tripod. Infrared light focuses at a different wavelength than visible light, so getting everything lined up, focused, and perfectly still is critical.

The finished photograph may look simple, but getting there often means carrying the gear, setting up the tripod, carefully composing the shot, checking focus and sometimes going to pretty extreme lengths to get the image I have in my head.

Here’s a little look behind the scenes—and one example of what all that work can produce.

The photograph is the finished product. The adventure getting there is part of the process.

WATER WEDNESDAY

This week, I’m sharing a few photographs of Glen Alpine Falls in the South Lake Tahoe region. Tucked just a little off the beaten path, this beautiful waterfall is one of those places that reminds you there are still plenty of natural gems waiting to be discovered.

The combination of rushing water, rugged rock, and the surrounding forest makes this a truly wonderful water feature—and well worth the short detour.

TUESDAY'S ARCHITECTURE

Over the years, I've had the opportunity to photograph some beautiful kitchens and they've always been among my favorite places to shoot.

What I love about architecture photography is the complexity. Every room is a puzzle - light, lines, reflections, textures and details all competing for their place in the frame. The challenge is figuring out how to bring all of those pieces together and turn the space into a single compelling image.

Here are a few kitchens from along the way. Each one was a different puzzle solve and that's exactly what made them so much fun to photograph.

MONOCHROME MONDAY

A little photographic improvisation from many years ago.

After a friend got her hair cut, I had an idea to combine a before and after photograph into one. Each figure was photographed separately on different days at the same location at the same time.

SUNDAY FREE-FOR-ALL

Ever feel like you are being watched?

A collection of moments when the wild paused long enough to look back. Different animals, different places, but the same unmistakable feeling - you've been noticed.

REEL-Y GOOD SATURDAYS

Mount Rainier is more than just a spectacular mountain - it's an active volcano. This short black and white infrared reel takes a look at Rainier and a few facts about one of the most iconic peaks in the Pacific Northwest.

Beautiful, Massive and still very much alive.
