I have one final story to tell for American 250.

The great Clarence Jones died a couple of months ago, and I have been thinking about him. He helped draft the “I Have a Dream” speech and smuggled out the papers that would become “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.”

I had a chance to talk to him (and take really bad pictures of him) once at his home in Palo Alto, and what he told me has stuck with me ever since.

American Mosaic: I’m excited to share this portrait series for America 250!

I photographed first-generation Americans, or people who have at least one immigrant parent.

First-generation Americans — like me! — are uniquely positioned to illustrate the American mosaic because they are born in the U.S. but also raised in some of their parents’ customs.

To highlight this union, each participant dressed in traditional attire from their heritage while posing in an Atlanta location that is meaningful to them.

Thank you to all of the people who participated and shared their stories and to my editors Sobrown and Bita Honarvar . Thanks also to Natrice Miller who reviewed my images and photographed my portrait, Andri Tambunan who helped with toning, keithlovelyjr who produced a whole video about this, and David Plazas who green lit my accompanying essay for the op-ed section.
