Kolob Canyons Scenic Drive, Zion National Park
Most visitors to Zion don't take the 45 minute drive around to the NW entrance of the park, but it is worth it! Grand and serene, and much less crowded :)

Such incredible geologic marvels in southern Utah! Capitol Reef National Park was perhaps the most intriguing and unexpected. But before we even reached the park boundary, the scenic drive (UT-24) approach was astounding. Really felt a bit like being on another planet, it was such a different landscape - an impression only enhanced by the fact that we were often the only people for miles! Here’s a sampling of the car-stopping roadside scenes...

Navajo Bridge over the Colorado River at Marble Canyon, providing access to the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. The 1929 north (left) bridge has been just for pedestrian use since it was replaced with the wider (right) vehicle bridge in 1995.

While we were there a crowd gathered to peer over the edge of the pedestrian bridge to observe a California Condor sitting on the structure. In 1987 the last 27 wild Cal. Condors were captured for breeding, and there are now 336 in the wild with 200 more in captivity. You can see the transmitter/tag on this one to monitor him. The black head indicates he is a juvenile; at age 6 or so his head will be bright pink-orange. They are the largest wild birds in North America, weighing 20 lbs. with wings spanning 10 feet. They may live up to ~60 years. Not pretty, I know, but magnificent creatures nonetheless.

Grand Canyon West viewpoints -
Eagle Point (top) - where the eroded ridge facing you looks rather like an eagle taking flight - do you see it?

Guano Point (bottom)- where there was once a cable tram line to a bat cave on the opposite ridge where nitrogen-rich... guano... was mined for fertilizer. A totally losing financial venture, but quite a feat nonetheless. (and for scale, there are dozens of people hiking up that peak)
