Helsinki Central Station, designed by architect Eliel Saarinen and completed in 1919, is one of the finest examples of National Romantic architecture in Finland. The clock tower and its four granite figures holding illuminated spheres have greeted travelers for over a century. They've watched the city grow up one train, one tram, and one red streak of light at a time. Although I'm technically off the clock, this one was worth the pause.

Some places don’t need color to feel alive. Cumberland Falls in black and white loses none of its power and gains something else entirely — a stillness that borders on unsettling, like the water’s been thundering through this gorge since long before anyone was here to see it.

Some ruins don’t need color. Just weight, silence, and a sky that’s done all the talking. This shot came from the roadside on a photography tour through southern Iceland. I didn’t go in, just pulled over between locations because it demanded to be photographed. An abandoned farmhouse, mountains standing guard, and I was chasing the kind of quiet that only empty buildings hold.

Urbex, or urban exploration, is the practice of documenting abandoned, forgotten, or off-limits structures that’ve been left to the elements. It’s part history, part curiosity, and it doesn’t always mean going inside. A shot from the road, sometimes, tells the whole story.

It's World Photography Day. This is your reminder to get the shot.

Buildings hold still. Flowers don't complain about the light. They're outstanding both subjects: Patient, forgiving, always ready when you are.

But people don't hold still: They grow up, move away, change their minds, change their faces. The version of them you're looking at now won't exist in a year. Not really.

So take the photo you feel silly taking. The one that's not for anyone but you. The tantrum. The bad haircut. The laugh you'll swear you'll remember and won't.

You won't regret the photos you took. You'll regret the ones you didn't.

The picture remembers.

A surprise question that changed everything. The Park of Roses does a pretty good job of making a moment feel bigger than it already is. The fountains had no idea they were about to become the backdrop of someone's favorite story.

I'm shooting an engagement session today and I've been thinking about past ones I've been lucky to photograph. This is an especially memorable one from the Park of Roses. Such a sweet couple -- and I love this shot from in front of the fountain.
