Exercises #7: PA Tuning with Graphic EQ

Concept: Don’t EQ one bad seat. When tuning a PA, make system-EQ decisions based on what you hear across the coverage area, not from one location. A frequency problem heard only in one spot may be caused by room reflections or cancellations rather than the PA itself.

Scenario: You’re tuning a church PA with pink noise and reference music. At FOH, 250 Hz sounds excessive, but when you walk the center and side seating areas, the low-mid balance sounds good.

What should you do?

A. Immediately cut 250 Hz by 6 dB on the main graphic EQ
B. Boost the high frequencies to compensate
C. Check several listening positions before changing the system EQ
D. Lower the subwoofers
