Meet Kristen, the baker, mom, and small business owner behind The Dough Co. on Market Street!

Kristen’s love for baking started her senior year of high school, and she eventually went on to study Baking and Pastry Arts at Alfred State.

She started at what was then called Laurabelles in 2020, later expanding in 2024 to create her micro bakery The Dough Co. What began as monthly bread deliveries grew this year into the brick-and-mortar shop you can now find on Market Street!

Since opening, Kristen has been doing it all — baking, helping customers, running the shop, and being a mom. Her husband and daughter help with the monthly bread deliveries, and her daughter can often be found hanging out in the shop while Kristen works.

When asked how the community has responded, Kristen said:

“The community has responded very, very positively. There’s been so much good feedback, everyone is excited to have it open! I just love how welcoming everybody is, I am excited to see how things grow and expand.”

Mary Sabol is a mother, grandmother, and retired RN. Today, she gets to add another title to the list: author. Her first book, INNERMOST MOODS, is published and officially out today!

A Corning resident for more than 30 years, Mary reflects on how much of the city’s charm has remained the same since she arrived. Hoping that Market Street and Centerway Square hold onto their character and that the magic of Sparkle and meeting Santa continues for the generations to come.

As a mother of three and grandmother of six, Mary shows that no matter the hurdles, obstacles, or stage of life you’re in, it’s always possible to push yourself, try new things, and step into new identities.

INNERMOST MOODS is a collection of poetry inspired by mental health, depression, and trauma. Mary has spent years writing and drawing from her own experiences, with the hope that her words might reach someone who needs them.

“I have been writing this book for years… I grew up kind of hardcore when I was small. A lot of post-traumatic stress, and over the years I’ve suffered depression and anxiety. So I know in the world we live in now there are a lot of people suffering, and there’s a stigma to it, and I just want to show that you can still go through all this and come out and be productive. There’s a lot of people who really struggle. I didn’t want to write a book book, it would be too long, so I decided I like to write poetry, so I put some of the trauma and depression into poetry… If I could help just one person out there, and let everybody know that you can go through this and still make it…still do something.”

Mary’s first book, INNERMOST MOODS, is out *TODAY* and can be purchased on Amazon or at Barnes & Noble.

Meet Juliet ✨

Corporate girlie turned fashionista and business owner. If you live in Corning, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve heard of Juliet and her store, The Fast Racks.

Juliet has been in the reselling world since 2013, when she started selling online alongside her mom. What began as online reselling eventually grew into selling thrifted finds out of her basement before becoming what it is today: The Fast Racks, a storefront on Bridge Street that Juliet transformed from a run-down property into her dream store.

But The Fast Racks is about more than just clothes for Juliet. Since opening her doors, she’s gotten to know even more of the people and personalities that make up Corning.

“The more you are in this community, the more you realize how deep the history is, how wonderful the people are, and that there is a group for every type of person. It is a melting pot, and not just a melting pot of diversity but a melting pot of personalities, and culture, and art, and style. So that’s what makes opening your own thrift store so cool because people do have unique style here. It’s not cookie cutter—these girls are expressing themselves and it is really cool to see that.”

Building a business from the ground up and raising kiddos, Juliet is incredibly inspiring to watch. She’s also quick to give credit where it’s due, saying she couldn’t do it without the support and help of her community.

I think that’s a pretty special part of owning a small business in a town like Corning. You build something of your own, but you don’t have to build it alone.

Meet Kathy Corcoran

Kathy has called Corning home her entire life. After spending more than 30 years working for Corning Incorporated, a career that took her all over the world, retirement gave her the opportunity to lean into a hobby she had grown to love—stained glass.

What started as a creative outlet 14 years ago eventually became Capture Stained Glass, a tucked-away gem in Painted Post that she opened three years ago.
Today, people can stop in and create their own stained glass suncatcher to take home the very same day. Her shop offers several designs to make for suncatchers, each piece cut by hand and prepared by Kathy.

Capture Stained Glass also offers multi-week stained glass classes and creates custom commissioned pieces.

When I asked Kathy how the shop came to be, she shared:

"I kind of had the idea that this could be a business. After working for Corning, I love people and I travelled all over the world with Corning Inc. I really like the area, I really like the people, and I wasn’t ready to just sit and not do anything. But I also wasn’t ready or prepared to do any more travel, so I started thinking about doing this, and I tested it out with some friends. We found three hours works out perfect, and by the time they’re done, they’re going, they can’t believe they made it!"

Talking with Kathy, it's easy to see that this isn't just about stained glass. It's about sharing a skill she's spent years learning, connecting with people in her community, and proving that retirement doesn't have to mean slowing down. Sometimes it's the perfect time to start something new.

Can we all agree that babies have absolutely no business growing up this fast? 🥹

One minute they're tiny enough to curl up on your chest, and the next they're sitting, crawling, standing, and giving you the biggest gummy grin.

If you've ever met Kira Woods, you know she has the kind of energy that lights up a room. As the lead singer of Kira and the Kindness, her love for music is impossible to miss. But what really stood out while talking with her was how much her band means to her. As she spoke about her bandmates, her eyes started to well up—it was one of those moments where you could just feel how grateful she is.

“It feels really good to be a part of the musical community here because that is something that I always wanted but never found anywhere else that I lived.”

Music has always been a part of Kira's life. Growing up surrounded by musicians on her father's side of the family, she started playing classical piano as a kid.

Kira moved to Corning almost three years ago, and her band came together in the most unexpected way. Through her mom, who is a Corning local, she met Lori Lyn Barrett, a longtime local musician, who introduced her to everyone—including her now bassist, Lisa, who is Lori’s wife. They jammed together a few times, and before they knew it, everything started falling into place.

“The thing that really spearheaded the project was I participated in a karaoke contest at The Brick, and part of my prize was a performance at GlassFest on the main stage. Obviously, I was not going to do that by myself, so I was like, ‘You guys—Paul, Mike, and Lisa—will you do this with me?’ And they said yes! And I was like, ‘Yes, yes, yes!’ And it kind of just went from there, and it's really been like a dream come true.”
