Balayage
(Swipe for wide crop)

Marys Peak chose to make an appearance this morning for the first time in several weeks. We're solidly into the wet season here, and the coastal range on this side is perpetually soaked in low cloud cover. Sometimes the clouds break at the eastern edge of the range for a bit, like a rain shadow, but for clouds. You have to watch for this, the breaks in the clouds, or else you'd think it was overcast all of the time.

Thought Bubbles
Nehalem Bay State Park

Giant bubbles can get so big without popping because they have stronger polymers - in this case guar gum. They create rainbow effects in the light because of varied thickness, and they swirl because of surface tension gradients. Both can be stabilized to create perfectly clear or perfectly non-swirling bubbles.

The kids weren't thinking about these facts. They were trying to blow small bubbles inside the giant bubbles. The dog didn't know what to think.

Climb, You Fools

(pinch zoom for the best details)
There are over 350 lava tube caves in the Deschutes National Forest, formed when a flow of pahoehoe lava cools on the exposed top and sides of the flow forming a crust that is left behind when the flow ends. The caves outside of Bend, OR formed over 1.7 million years ago and are now covered by earth and access is gained through collapses and punctures in the tube crust.

The Taylors have been exploring these caves for three generations. Grandpa Tim couldn't make this trip, so it was a special privilege to be able to share these photos with him and his wife after the trip, showcasing the adventure and fearlessness of their daughter and grandchildren.

Come Closer

Portraits are fascinating. Some of my favorites are the brightly lighted close-ups of Martin Schoeller. There are no props, no costumes and are framed so that literally all you can discern are the features of the subjects face. I find them breathtakingly intimate.

I also like the opposite of this style - natural lighting, and distance subjects, but framed and edited so that the face is still the lone focus, though the viewer has to work for it a little.

I'm including four examples here of the Taylor family, who are proving to be exceptionally photogenic. If you know them, I think you'll see an essential element of each person in their portrait here - the sense of adventure in one, the wildness of another, the introversion, the fierce seeking of connection. In fact, the more I look at them, the more of their essential qualities I notice - the combination observer/participant, the periodic insecurity, the loner who still sticks out, the intensity combined with caution.

I dunno - maybe that's all just me overthinking things, seeing what I want or imagine. Either way, I think contextualized found portraits are fun when I come across them in my photo roll. I just wish they showed up better on mobile screens....

OCF Spectacular

The Oregon Country Fair is, literally, spectacular. It is an absolute spectacle, continuously displayed, for three days each summer in Oregon. Originally a fundraiser for an alternative school, Children's House, in Eugene, Oregon. Initially called the Renaissance Fair, the original OCF was held on Hawkins Heights over the weekend of November 1–2, 1969, and was promoted with the tagline "come in costume". It has since migrated to a private parcel of land in Veneta, about 15 miles west of Eugene, and is a non-stop, 72 hour festival of creativity and community, with craftspeople, food venders, and spectacularly adorned guests moving and shifting more than 500 acres of Oregon woodland trails, clearings, and dells. Over 65 fully volunteer work crews make the operation run smoothly and safely, despite attendance reaching over 50,000 some years.

My thanks goes out to Brad and Jana of for hosting me in their longstanding camp, and to for welcoming me behind their brilliant cookie booth at the fair.

Only had time to check out one end of Open Streets Corvallis this year before I had to head back home - but I still saw some cool stuff and ate some delicious food, including Pound Fitness with Kahea, Nick's Soul Food, and some Trick Roping by an as yet unnamed performer...(anyone who saw this too, can you help me identify that dapper cowboy?)

Oh, also hung out with some of my Squirrel's Tavern chums in the 2Towns Beer(?) Garden

Modern humans are always DOING something, especially when they notice a camera pointed at them.

Don't fall for this trap.

Mindful photographers are seeking to capture LIGHT and MOOD, not just action. I talk about this a bit in a recent post here:
https://www.dylanboydphotography.com/blog/the-weight-of-smoke/

No time to read a few paragraphs? I get it. The point is this - you don't have to plan or do anything exciting for there to be a meaningful photo waiting in your midst. In fact the quiet moments are going to be really special to remember if you can manage to grab an image of one to save for later.

Contact
(swipe)

Eye contact, physical contact, emotional contact - each of these requires a certain level of vulnerability, and therefore safety and understanding. We allow, invite, or extend ourselves into the presence of another person, and trust we will take care and be taken care of.

Sometimes I manage to capture the richness of contact between people who love and care for each other. It's fun to show them back to the people in the photo, they see something of that deep, grounding feeling that comes with this kind of sharing. Have me around long enough with my camera and I'll probably get a shot of you and someone important to you - a capture of your moment of contact.
