Our Creature Feature of the day is the Pileated woodpecker (Drocopus pileatus)!

The Pileated woodpecker is a crow-sized woodpecker that is primarily black, with white highlights and a red crest. These birds favor mature forests and heavily wooded areas, making Hot Springs National Park an ideal home for them. They play an important role in our ecosystem by helping to control insect populations. Their primary food source is ants, supplemented by termites, beetle larvae, and other insects such as flies, caterpillars, and grasshoppers. They use their massive bill to pull bark off trees to find ant colonies, then using their long, barbed tongues to poke into holes and drag out ants. Fun fact: adult males have a red line from the bill to the throat, often referred to as a “moustache”, while in adult females these are black.
