Their very first cooking class. 🥹

Chicco just turned 16, Miles is 13, and their mom told me before class: “Make them work.” 😂

So I did.

They took my Voyage to Asia class, which is definitely prep-intensive, and these two were absolute troopers. What I loved most was seeing Chicco’s genuine love of cooking and watching him share that with his younger cousin.

And apparently the most important lesson of the night was: dessert first. They inhaled it. 😂

I keep thinking how sweet it would be if someday they remember this as their first cooking class, and maybe even remember me as their first cooking teacher. More than anything, I hope they remember that cooking can be really, really fun. ❤️

An LA date idea that isn’t just dinner. ❤️

They were visiting from San Francisco and spent one of their LA vacation days cooking together instead of just going out to eat.

A little chopping, a little teamwork, a lot of food, and a pretty great date night.

**Bestie date, but make it delicious. 😊**

These two have been friends since they were young, so there was plenty of teasing, laughing, and cooking together while we made my Voyage to Asia menu.

Honestly, this is one of my favorite ways to spend time with someone you love: make something together, eat it together, and have a lot of fun in between. ❤️

**Bestie date, but make it delicious. 😂🥟**

These two have been friends forever, so naturally there was just as much teasing as cooking during their Voyage to Asia class.

Honestly, this might be the best kind of friend date: make something together, laugh the whole time, then sit down and eat everything you just cooked.

His first cooking class ever… and this was the message he sent me afterward. 🥹

Greg told me he was already thinking on the drive home about everything he wanted to try again on his own.

What stayed with me most was this:

“This is stuff that no one’s ever taught me.”

That’s exactly why I love teaching these classes. You don’t have to already know your way around a kitchen. We cook together, learn the little things that make a big difference, and then sit down and enjoy what we made.

I wrote these words in 2007, while my husband George was in the hospital and my daughters were still children.

Usually, I share food and cooking here. Lately, I’ve been thinking about sharing some of the personal writing I’ve carried with me for years too.

Food, family, grief, caregiving, and the ordinary work of making a life have always been connected for me.

So this is something a little different: a story from that time, told while I tend to a few small things that are still growing.
