Reflections

While on a road trip through central Texas in 2019, I took this photo of the reflection of trees in the Medina River. This was an example of not knowing what kind of image you took until you go back and review it later. When I looked at this image, I was struck by the emotion it evoked. The reflection of the trees in the water, the starkness of the almost leafless branches, and the cloudy sky all came together to create a very reflective, contemplative, sepia-toned scene....

National Hummingbird Day!

September 5 is National Hummingbird Day. Hummingbirds are some of my very favorite birds. These aerial specialists can hover in place and fly backwards! I look forward to the two times of year when the hummingbirds migrate to their home for the season. Right now, they are migrating south to their warmer winter homes in Mexico and Central America. It is so much fun to watch them flit across the quiet wild, dive bombing each other!...

Quacking around the Quiet Wild

Our little neighborhood has several ponds and all the wildlife that accompanies them. So, lots of ducks! The mother Muscovy duck below was walking along the side of the street with all her little ducklings behind her as I was leaving the neighborhood. Thankfully, I saw them hop up on the grass as I was leaving the neighborhood, so I didn't have to turn around and shoo them off the road!...

Summer Updates

The birds have had to eat flower and plant seeds, insects, berries, and other sources for food when they visit the quiet wild. The backyard became the site of frequent, very unwelcome furry visitors, so we had to put away the bird feeders. Thankfully, birds know how to find their own food without us! The birds still frequent the quiet wild to visit the bird baths and rest in the bushes and trees....

More from the Quiet Wild studio

We are in the heat of summer in the Quiet Wild, so indoor activities are on the agenda! The painting below is of a lighthouse in the Northeastern part of the United States. Not sure I did it justice, but it is my impression of an isolated lighthouse at the end of the road. I really like the shading of the lighthouse to show the aging process and shadows....

May Flowers

Where flowers bloom, so does hope. ~Lady Bird Johnson The Earth laughs in flowers. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson May is the month in which the flowers I forgot I planted last year begin to poke out from the soil and remind me they are there. So it was with the Cleome plant that sprouted up in the middle of the Lantana!...

New View in the Quiet Wild

The patio extension and new grass are in, and we have been enjoying them for a couple of weeks. They give the backyard a whole new look. The grass is like a carpet underfoot, and the patio extension covers the area that never gets sunlight. The flora and fauna have really taken off this spring. There is a lot of activity in the soil and in the air!...

Everything is coming up Roses!

I pruned the roses in late January. They have spent the last couple of months replenishing their energy to produce beautiful blooms. Well, they have started blooming! Below are some of the images of all the roses in my garden, as of today. Yellow roses always say "Texas" to me. The yellow Drift rose makes a smaller bloom and cluster of buds....

Hello March!

Listening to Wild Mountain Thyme by Stephen Wake, and reveling in the glory that is March. The flora is continuing its slow awakening to the warmer days. If you sit still and listen closely enough, you can almost be a part of the awakening. This Delphinium plant is exploding in beautiful blooms! The white Larkspur is a showy plant with gorgeous feathery blooms stacked on top of each other....

Art in the quiet wild

Retirement allows time to explore my creative expression. I never dreamed that I would be able to tap into a well of imagination and inspiration in the visual arts. But the time spent in the garden watching things grow and evolve together, the miasma of soil, creatures, rain, and wind, brings about a compulsion to create. I am exploring many creative avenues, but painting feeds my soul in a way nothing else does....
